The Tall and Short of it
Read and take from it what you want:
Some years back when getting off the plane on Aruba meant climbing down the stairs, I saw the most amazing thing.
The couple in front of me on the staircase going down stopped once their feet touched soil and the man bent over and grabbed some of that very dirty black airport tarmack and had some black pebbly bits in his hand. I (as well as the rest of the people in back of me) watched. He took his wifes' hand and opened it and poured the black dirt in it as if it were diamonds. He bent down to her (she was short and he was tall) and kissed her forehead. She looked up and said, "we are here honey". They turned around and the tall and short couple went on towards the airport to be processed like the rest of the humanity that reaches our island.
At luggage pick up, I walked over to the lady and mentioned that I was touched by what I saw. She smiled and said that Aruba was their honey moon and that they had saved for it for a while and it meant alot.
I shook her hand and when he came over I shook his and offered my congratulations on their wedding. The guy looked at me as I was nuts and asked "what wedding?" I mentioned what his wife had told me and he then said something to the effect of "Oooh - well maybe that needs to be explained a bit. We were married 5 years ago and did not have enough money to have a honeymoon here, so we just did not have one until now. We saved 5 years to pay for the wedding and another 5 for the honeymoon."
Aruba creates this sort of thing. Why? Have no clue in the world - wellll maybe I do.
I know that someday someone I will be at the airport or at the beach and ask ssomeone a similar question and they will say to me to mind my own business, however it seems so much to be my business. When that day comes, I will apologize
