Travel to Venezuela is not recommended by the US government at this time due to the amount of unrest and tours from Aruba have been cancelled.

If you go down near baby beach by the oil refinery on a clear day you can actually see the coast line! It was really cool the day we were there. When I get through all of our pictures I'll try to send one. We were told it's only 18 miles away.

We went to Venezuela once on a cruise about 10/12 years ago. We took a day trip along the coast and through the country side. It was dirty but fun. Some took a trip into Caracus. At dinner that evening they told us it was a beautiful city but rather unnerving to see military police all over the place carrying automatic weapons. As far as I know all cruise ships have supended travel to Venezuela and Aruba no longer offers day trips there. I wouldn't reccomend going there. No need to put yourself in harms way. Stay put in Aruba and enjoy.

Due to the recent developments there, Venezuela should not be on your priority list of places to visit. The economy is causing a great deal of crime, much of which is as sensless as it is violent. We had to layover there some months ago on our way to another destination and it was terrible. To give you an idea, we stayed at the Euro Building Hotel, which is a rather upscale place. On check in they advised us not to allow the waiter in to the room for room service deliveries without first calling the room-service department and getting the persons name and then confirming it at the door prior to letting him in.

I am so saddened by the state of affairs in Venezuela. What a horrible way for these people to live. I also would have loved to hop over one day and visit, since I love to travel and one of my grandmothers was South American. (we're not sure from Venezuela or Brazil - 2 people left alive have alternate stories!)

This information sheet might be helpful. It says, in short. Dont go.

When I first went to Aruba in the early 90's, the person at the front of the hotel booking trips would not book a trip for me there. She said I would have to find someone else to book it for me. She said she no longer went there as it was dangerous.

Another thing, look at all the baseball player who have had his mother kidnapped there! They kept her captive for many months.
