Cool Re: best chinese food

We ate at Kowloon in February... it was only fair. Funny thing was that other than the 5 of us, I think there were about 6 Arubans in the restaurant at the next table who all smoked. One of the people in our party couldn't stand the smoke and asked if we could change our table. There was a "summit" meeting to figure out where to put us. Considering that every other table was empty, I was laughing hysterically. Finally, after a lot of chatter, they put us in the very front of the restaurant. It was much better years ago!

Thanks ElaineS for the Kowloon review... I cracked up at your report of the "summit meeting" about where to re-seat your group! Things can change over the years & I'm sorry to hear your recent experience was mediocre. I guess we'll skip Kowloon this next trip (winter '04).

A place called Pacifico near Casabari Rocks. We haven't been there in a few years though so not sure if we could find it again - might give it a try this year.

Some years ago there was a chinese buffet. If memory serves, it was on one of the roads that crosses the island not far from the High rise area and was on the right as you drove east.

It was very very good - but we've never found it again.

(Now THAT was helpful, wasn't it -- geeze)

Seagull - I know where you are talking about, imagine that - I think it was called Cheng's. right?? Never ate there, and I don't think it is still open. I have never heard of any of the places you are talking about, except this one of course. I would love to get my Chinese food fix while on the isl. Where should I try???

nanc, i am going back to hung paradijs. the only time we ate there was about 3 years ago and it was amazingly good. slightly different style than we are used to in the states (supposedly dutch influences) but the difference was pleasant rather than a negative. i will let you know how it is. should try it in about 2-3 weeks from now, just don't know the exact day. only meal we select before we go is the first night so we don't have to worry or make any plans when we are tired from flying.

A Chinese restaurant near where I worked used to send a delivery person 'round with an "order." No one had ordered Chinese -- but when we smelled it we HAD to have it.

It was months before we figured out his marketing technique.

(I guess we'll stop looking for Cheng's as it's closed now. Too bad. It had become a ritual)

Good chinese food is at Paris restaurant in the Wilhelminastraat (not as expensive as Kowloon, but very good). Also very good Asian Delight, very close to El Gaucho.

I think you should try them both. They both have special dishes making it worth your while to go there.
