Unhappy Natural Bridge falling down!

I got an email from our resort, Paradise Beach Villals, who sent pictures of the Natural Bridge that apparently collapsed. It was sent on Friday, 9/2. It's incredible that such an icon as the natural bridge in Aruba has fallen. All there is left is the hugh arch broken and caved in, lying in the sea. I don't know if anyone else heard of it. I have some pictures which were sent to me. I can individually send them to anyone who is interested.

What a shame that such a natural thing has been ruined.

At least you were able to see it one more time before this happened. Like you said, at least no one was injured. I have many pictures of it when we were there on one of our visits.

This is just a general question about the area surrounding the natural bridge, but I am hoping someone can answer it for me. What are all the little rock towers around there? There were so many of them and it was so interesting, but I haven't seen anything about them in any other books or pictures. I am starting a scrapbook and would like to include the background of these rocks. We called them kanooku rocks. I tought my friend knew, but I guess that was something that she made up. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

it depends who you listen to. Apparently the Arubians take offense to it and many spend their time knocking them down. But rumor has it that its suppose to bring good luck. Each rock represents something else (kinda like, Live, Love, Laugh, etc). I don't rememeber the myth behind it and I'm sure someone else does. We were told about it on our Jeep Tour by an Arubian tour guide but am now told that its just a tourist thing and an eyesore.

actually it's the tourists that started it. they along with some tour guides created a myth. some arubans laugh about it and the rest find it mars the natural beauty of the island. suffice it to say that arubans did not create the myth.

We saw the same thing in Sedona AZ, hiking thru Oak Creek Canyon. Piles and piles of rocks, shaped more or less like pyramids. That particular area is notorious for it's mystical and extraterrestrial energy, so I wasn't that surprised to see them there. I've seen them along the north coast of Aruba, and while I don't believe they represent anything other than 'I was here', I fail to see the harm and wouldn't be the one kicking them over...

Another myth that was either started by or foisted upon tourists with no basis in authentic Aruban lore was the 'tradition' of placing a rock in your mouth for good luck at the Alto Vista chapel. I don't know if this little gag is still practiced these days but I know that it was still in force in the late 1980's.

Everytime I see the collapsed photos it makes me very sad, I've walked across it many times over the last 10 years.

I'm just glad I have some photos of it while it was still standing in my photo album:

We feel the same way. We're going back in March - wonder what it looks like live?
