A story like this makes me sick. I know I'm reading between the lines but I suspect that this practice (of tankers dumping oil, flushing their holds, or whatever in the middle of the night) is far more commonplace than any of us realize. I presume that most of the time, the waste oil never comes near shore. Perhaps the weird weather pattern brought on by Gustav caused this slick to affect the islands. Whatever the case, I hope they pinpoint the culprit and fine them into oblivion.

Okay, getting off my soapbox now.

Now I find myself in a quandry. Should I bring my suitcase refinery with me or not. I was hoping to percolate a couple gallons of high octane jet fuel while enjoying the beach. I would offer it to AA in exchange for a sandwich on my return flight.
These compact reifneries (walmart at $49.99) are convienent, portable and light weight. I carry mine in a backpack whenever I hike near the several hundred new drilling sites that have gone up here in the Rockies. You can always count on a fresh spill somewhere nearby. I've saved the purchase price over and over again. Makes a great Christmas or wedding gift.
Just a thought,
KK

unfortunately, you are almost right. i take that back, you are right. if we had that pocket refinery none of us would ever have to pay for fuel. no matter where you go you read about this garbage, it is a neverending battle. it's bad enough when things are accidental (gotta admit that the olive oil spill is one of those, lol) but not enough people anywhere care about ecology.

maybe fining their oily little bottoms off to the point that there is no profit in their product would help a little but every government cares more about what goes into their pockets than what happens to our planet so the courts reduce the fines saying that the rich shouldn't suffer any more. anyone remember the quote about exxon and their suffering that the courts stated in their reduction of the fines?

charlie, can i keep sharing your soapbox or do we have to both jump over the edge?

hahaha, honest truth? nah. there are lots of things we can blame elaine for. yum yums, humor, wit, creativity, yum yums, feather boas, friendship, warmth, yum yums (am i repeating myself?) and most of all warmth and generosity (see, i do have a serious side). can't picture anyone blaming elaine for oil spills though. but maybe we can try?

Is swearing allowed on this site?? I previously promised, avowed and gave my word that I wouldn't do it. I R cornfuzed???
Anyway, I hope they leave some of that black gold for me. I hear that the Venezuelan variety has a spicy kick to it. Great for mountain driving and leaves a sparkling bouquet.

this board has a very strange language censor on it. yeah, you can swear but only in your head. i think the censor software was created because we are a pg 13 board since sometimes we get children asking questions here. however substituting with '$%^^' with the proper number of symbols for the word, gives us something to ponder over, lol.

I suppose this is neither here nor there, but I remember a big "stink"....probably in the 1980's...when an Esso/Exxon tanker emptied its tanks in the lower Hudson River of New York. In those days, it was one of the few times I had heard of any mention of Aruba...because they said the tanker had brought a load from Aruba. Exxon paid a large fine for their action.

Since tankers take on loads before arriving in Aruba, they may "clean out" tanks more often than we know or suspect. This time, they got caught.

The oil business is "dirty business" (in more ways than one) no matter where it is practiced.
