Default what do we like about aruba?

ok people, chime in on this. we don't care how many items are repeated by everyone. we want your personal 'best of aruba' list.

if you were to describe aruba to someone who had never been there, what would you say? where would you tell them to go? what should they do? how many times have you been there? why you return? you have the idea, now write it.

and thank you learjet9 for suggesting it.

I Love Aruba Re: what do we like about aruba?

The people.... my number one love, too!

Weather, beaches, ambiance, getting to see timeshare owners, and board posters who are a big part of my world.

I love that nothing requires getting "dressed up," but if that's your thing, you can.

My January trip's the 17th year I'll be returning, and I still haven't seen or experienced all there is to that little island in the sun.

When asked why I go to the same place every year, and not try somewhere new, my response is always the same... "because I love it, and until you've tried it, you just can't understand!"

Elaine pretty much summed it up. In March, it will be my 12th trip.

There are so many reasons...We go there for:

* getting out of Ohio's winter, where you can count on great weather
on Aruba
* the beach
* seeing my Aruba friends who have timeshares at the same time
* great restaurants
* totally laid back atmosphere
* of all the carribean islands I have visited, Aruba is not like most others
(where the country is very poor and there is a lot of begging by the
locals)
* it's safe
* gambling
* lots of activities and sights to see
* Aruban people

The people...I love the people, the drinking and not having to drive

The beautiful beach
My timeshare condo right on the beach
My palapa
Having mimosa's every morning on my balcony anticipating another glorious day.
Not having to worry about a thing
Being able to finish reading a book
Not being interupted while listening to my favorite music.
And just being able to lay on my lounger and look at that beautiful ocean with every shade of blue you could imagine!

I Love Aruba Re: what do we like about aruba?

I love the tropical breezes, the warmth of the sun, feeling the sand between my toes when I walk on the beach.

We'll be going on our 29th or 30th trip (we don't count any more) and still never tire of it. I tell friends who wonder why we go so often that there are so many restaurants and casinos and places to go that no two trips are ever alike.

I feel incredibly free and blissful whenever I'm there.

People, weather, beaches, but must important is the people that you come in contact with. We've been going to Aruba twice a year since 1988, and have not grown tired of it, we can't wait to go back this May.

I knew this would fill up quickly! If I were pressed to pick my top favorite activity, though very difficult: I love to rent a jeep and go to the "outback"! We usually do it twice one every trip spending the entire day sight-seeing. I'll also say that whatever anybody says is their favorite activities, no matter what it is, I agree. Other than a very bad week back in 2005 (some sort of music fest) We have had a near perfect time in Aruba every time for the past 16 years.

About Aruba specifically, the people, pure water, access to good medical help that speak English, the beaches, the relative safety! Did I mention the people?? I could go on but I think you get the idea!!

Let's see.....there are way too many reasons we return...to pick a few would be hard.

The feeling of peace and tranquility are truly way up there on the list. The fact that I shed a tear each and every time we prepare to leave is proof of that.

The friends that we have made there over the 10 years that we have been going is another big reason for our return each and every year.

Wonderful weather.......beaches that we love...and the most beautiful water that just invites you to float in it has it's ranking.

Now the people that live there that we have come to know as friends and some as family.....that is the most precious of reasons to us. I know that people don't understand that part so much...but all of us here do. They are friendly...warm....honest....happy...and above all genuinely happy to have us there. We are tourists...but they (for the most part) don't just consider us their meal tickets...they want to make us love their island as our own.

Food is big....some of the best....anywhere....period.

You can feel comfortable and communicate with people there. That was one of the big reasons my husband loves it there....they speak English...they take the time and learn other languages so they can make you feel at ease.

And as much as alot of people don't like the Americanization of a foreign land....that is another reason we like it there....we are offered a choice....not very adventurous eaters, and with the American choice of food...........not so far as Wendy's or Subway...but better restaurants....we don't have to worry about food.

Looking forward to our next trip.....already lining up the friends and have all our dates on a calendar ...............can't wait.

This is just a short list of the loves we have.....

2011 will be my 26th year in Aruba and probably my 40th visit. At one time I visited three times a year, but now am fortunate to be on the island for the month of February.
---number one in my favorites---the wonderful Aruban people who are hard-working, friendly, courteous, gentle and kind
---I never get enough of the view from my balcony overlooking the breathtaking Caribbean Sea----every morning I open the slider and take a deep breathof the freshness of our wind-swept island in the sun. I love watching the cruise ships as they slowly make their way toward the harbor. Then, of course, there's the spectacular sunsets with no two the same.
---I love my walks on the incomparable white powdery sand beach, looking for shells and sea glass. What could be more wonderful than floating in the warm, clear acquamarine sea?
---There is nothing finer than lounging under MY chickee and seeing friends I meet every year at ABC/CDM, and of course meeting new people every year. How great it is to see friends from this Board!!!
---I enjoy getting into my Yaris and going for a leisurely drive around the island, enjoying the hotel strip, the Antilla wreck, the California Lighthouse, stopping whenever and wherever. I enjoy the ride up the hill to the water tank, taking the same pictures every year of the view from the tank and really feeling the wind.
---My favorite spot to meditate, pray and enjoy-----the Chapel at Alto Vista, tranquilly set high above the sea. No matter what one's faith----it is a must-see.
---I am always in awe of the sights of the wild side, the rocky terrain and the rough seas.
---I would be remiss if I didn't mention the diverse menus of the awesome restaurants---the best food in the world in a variety of ambiences.
My prayer is that I can return to my beautiful island for many, many years.

I'm going to focus on this part of the post:

For someone that has never been to Aruba, I would say thay it's a small island but probably bigger than you expect. It is a densely populated, highly developed island that still has large parts that belong entirely to nature. The climate is drier than most Caribbean islands and the scenery shows it. Although not technically a desert, the scenery in the interior of the island is distinctly desert like, with cacti and rugged landscapes, and you can be just about guaranteed that the weather will not interfere with your plans. There are no real mountains but it is not accurate to describe the island as "flat" (as many tourist sites do). Parts of the island are quite hilly and they add to the sense of variety in the landscape.

The island is quite prosperpous, with a well developed infrastructure. As a result, the island has a relatively low crime rate and few areas that would qualify as slums. Drinking water is better than the water you drink at home. Hotels and resorts run the gamut from high-rise, full-service resorts to small, intimate villas, and everything in between. There are over 100 restaurants to chose from and a whole range of other activites, such as golf and water sports, to keep you busy. Or, if you just want to relax and do nothing, you can do that, too. Aruba boasts several miles of some of the finest beaches on the planet. The beaches in front of the large resorts teem with people and activities, but there are plenty of other beaches where you can get away from the crowds and enjoy some quiet solitude, if that's what you're looking for.

But the real attraction on Aruba has to be the people. In addition to being relatively well-off, they are the most genuinely welcoming people you will ever meet. They are truly proud of their island and they love to show off their homeland to visitors.

In short, there are reasons why Aruba has the highest rate of repeat visitors in the region.

Ok., I hope my "two cents Opinion," is worth something.

How can one really describe "Paradise?" They call it "One Happy Island," because not only are the residents happy; friendly; and anxious to make you and yours feel the same; but you leave with a feeling of truly having had another wonderful experience on the Island.

I love; as I said, the natives; absolutely wonderful weather;sandy beaches with beautiful water that hardly ripples; people that recognize you and welcome you back at the hotels, and, finally; almost all the restaurants serve good food; efficient and friendly service.

I probably could go on and on; but, obviously, when it snows;becomes cold; and miserable here; I think of lying on the beach in Aruba.

I have been there numerous times...a couple of times diverting to Mexico...but, always decide that Aruba is the one place that I would like to vacation.

The fact that you can rent a jeep and tour the whole island while there in just a day quickly or take your time with 2 days. It makes the trip more relaxing and you don't miss out on anything. Can't go wrong with all the fun water activities and the delicious food. The best part would have to be the safe drinking water and that you can feel "relatively safe" on the island.

Would definitely recommend a vacation to anyone looking for a nice adventurous, yet relaxing time!

We've racked up about 19 visits, and still going strong. Above all, I love the people - genuine, caring, friendly and absolutely loveable. That being said, I too love the sense of freedom and peace that comes over me the minute I take my first step on the island. In no particular order, here are my favorites:

You are free to veg out, or party down.
You are free to read a good story, or create one of your own.
You are free to enjoy total solitude, or hang with old friends.
You are free to hang with old friends, or meet new ones.
Free to return to the same old places, but have a brand new experience.
Free to see a sunset every day, and never ever see the same one twice.
You are free to swim in the ocean, or just lie in the sand.
You are free to gamble away your money, or maybe hit a jackpot.
You are free to relax and party and eat and drink and visit and explore.

You are free

Smile Re: what do we like about aruba?

The other day my wife asked me when I was going to cut the grass. I said soon. She said is that soon as in a few minutes or soon as in Aruba time? I lol. we are always on "Aruba time" when we are there. That means no hurry, no worry. Relaxation at all times. This does not mean we dont do anything, it just means there is no hurry to do things or get things done. It is hard to rank what we enjoy about Aruba so I wont try.

The people are friendly and helpfull. Unlike the French, they like tourists to come.
The weather is almost always perfect.
The restaurants are absolutely wonderfull.
You can drink the water. If you want to. Hic.
There are no nicer beaches anywhere.
You cant get lost for very long.
The ocean is crystal clear most of the time and warm.
Snorkeling is great and easy.
The golf course at Tierra Del Sol is well taken care of and a true test.
Eleven casinos.
Iguanas everywhere.
Birds everywhere.
Goats everywhere.(not as many as in past years.)
Fresh seafood.
Cleanest movie theater I was ever in.
Have never seen a mosquito.(I have heard others say they exist, but we have not seen one)

To sum it all up-Aruba has everything I want in a relaxing vacation. All the things and more that I listed above plus the phone never rings on Aruba. That is important to me. I spend every working day as a slave to my phone. 14th trip coming up in October.

The people, of course.
I have probably told some of this story before.
We were coming for years and came again 11 days after the 9/11 attacks.
The plane was about 60% full.
We were welcomed as usual.
Many natives said things like "so sorry for what happened to your country".
The sentiment was genuine...and sometimes came with tears on each side.
It was memorable.

Of course, all the other things about a great place to vacation have always been true for us...since 1988.

I know I know!!

1. Landing there. so far away from home and yet......home.

2. The drinks. I can drink there,,so I do.

3. Safety..I like to feel safe while i'm drinking. The glasses and cups are very sturdy.

4. The sidewalks are really wide. So, while walking back to the Hotel with my wife on my back it doesn't matter if I sway a bit.

5. The food. I like food. I eat just about every day. Since we stay at an all Inclusive I can eat practictally all day long. If there happens to be an un-scheduled eclipse..it's just me after the buffet.

6. Shopping. I like shopping even more than chewing on tin foil. That says it all. But seriously, if I did love shopping i'd be walking around with more bags than Betty White. (i luv betty white btw, mary tyler moore show)

7. Getting Lost. You cant. I get lost in my own back yard and FREAK OUT!! Not in Aruba. Just keep going, we will find our destination and maybe even a few surprises along the way. That doesn't happen at 'home'.

8. Rock Formations. Yes.. if you are a fan of rock formations you have found your Graceland! Unfortunately they mean nothing other than boredom and a possible obsession for Jenga.

You are too too funny. Does your wife share your sense of humor? That way she can carry you on her back once in a while. Share share, that's fair. And I think swaying is very underrated. I actually kind of like it. I have better rhythm swaying than dancing. That'll tell you a whole lot about my dancing. I'm with you on the shopping thing. There I said it, I'm a girl and I don't like shopping. I can take it for maybe 30 minutes, then I'm done. You all go shop, and just meet me at the bar.

I think we're soul sisters... I HATE to shop, and do it only under duress!

Let's see .....> let me weigh this ... shopping / drinking! Yep, drinking wins hands down!! After a few drinks, I "think" I can dance, but in reality, it's kinda a swayin' to the music. Now that I think about it, I sway without music!!

There I said it, I'm a girl and I don't like shopping. I can take it for maybe 30 minutes, then I'm done. You all go shop, and just meet me at the bar.

Well Mary..Lainey..Sherry..et all..

I try really really hard not to take life too seriously. So far this attitude has worked out for me. (except for that time at the (DMV). Vacations should start with a blank canvas and never be color by numbers...just my opinion.

Lets enjoy it!! I need sand between my _____!

Where have you been all my life? It's so nice to hear some other females who share my dislike (and that's putting it mildly) for shopping. Most of my friends consider it, like, entertainment for pete's sake. I too only shop under duress.

I LOVE how you look at LIFE, and wish I could take a page from your book!

I do have a blank canvass from the minute I walk out of the airport, and it never fails... the new pictures, and the new memories, and unabashed love filling up that canvass are always better than the yearl before. I hope someday that you and Mrs. Drinkalot will be part of my canvass , and we can all have, and enoy sand between our ____________for posterity! I'm going to wish upon a star for that to happen, and maybe dreams will come true.

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you

If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do

(Fate is kind, she brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing)

Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you thru
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true

Signed......Stellllllllllllllaaaaaaaaa

No..we absolutely do not share the same sense of humor. Quite a contrast actually. If I find something to be funny or amusing, she looks at me the same way I look at a Rubiks Cube.

After going to Aruba every year since 1988, we don't have great expectations...except a good, relaxing vacation. We are now retired almost 8 years and count our blessings that we can afford 3 weeks in Aruba.
We don't expect the phone to ring, We want to have a do-nothing vacation...no doctor's appointments, no calls hoping that neighbors, family and friends are doing well without our assistance.
Aruba is a wonderful place for this endeavor.
We had a bad experience in 2008 when our guest/friend had a medical emergency. He had to be evacuated to Miami via air ambulance. Not a good outcome 6 weeks later!
I still get sad thinking of this time. I prefer to think of the other time that he had a memorable trip to AUA with us...a trip that prompted him to return 6 years later.
So many good things about Aruba. We are just reminded that bad things sometimes happen. We'll still remember the good times...and hope for many more good times!

I Love Aruba Re: what do we like about aruba?

So, I started reading this post about a week ago and wanted to come up with some sort of crafty response, but I am not sure there is much left to say. One thing I would add, though, about things we like about Aruba is this: the friends we make on this board. If it wasn't for Aruba, we wouldn't have all found each other.

How very true-------this forum has given us so much----we keep in touch throughout the year and we have so much in common----our special love for Aruba, our home away from home. Through this love of Aruba we have also gotten to know much about one another's lives away from Aruba. We share laughs and an occasional tear. When we are lonesome we know we can get onto the computer and find our Aruba friends. That in itself is a blessing.

I Love Aruba Re: what do we like about aruba?

"what would you say?"
---- Let me add to my Post above that Aruba is not for everyone.
First year we went was in 87 and bought a timeshare. Been back every year but one plus day trips off of cruise ships. The one year we didn't come we rented to a fellow worker of my wife. She said the wind was too much for her so won't return. Also People that like to be entertained might not like it either.
For us its R&R just sitting on that great beach, going out to dinner, ......
We still take a trip once in awhile to see other parts of the world.
A few months ago was on a cruise ship on the Med and visited countries and islands(Turkey, Greece, ....)
We go in June so always nice weather. Really feel bad for first timers that went this past fall and had bad weather.

There are so many things we love. The first one being that hot blast of air on our faces when we walk out of the airport and we know we are there.
The people on the island...some of the workers at the resorts who have made us feel very much at home.
The beauty of the island...even though it's not really lush and tropical, but tropical enough for us.
We love to rent a car and venture out...and Hans has made renting a great experience for us.
Love the excursions, especially sailing on the Tranquillo with Anthony...sorry to hear Greg is no longer with him.
The water...oh the beautiful water and the first sight of it as we fly in...always have my A seat so I can begin taking pictures.
The tradewinds....love the tradewinds....you'll never hear me complaining about that.
MJ's....our favorite place to eat...we do AI but do venture out for dinner at times.
The BB parties and meeting people from different forums...the friendships we have gained from people we've met....priceless.
BALASHI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah Baby...
The first time we went to Aruba it was like we fell in love all over again...just a magical feeling...and everytime we fly in, it's there all over again. Never would have thought a destination could do that to you.
Missed going last year....but come he** or high water, we'll be there in October.
By the way....this is a great thread and I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts.
Oh...almost forgot...buying some favorite beverages at the duty free on departure....especially Sambuca....Tom's new love. LOL

The peaceful serenity of sitting on the beach looking out into the beautiful water. The warm sun shining down on me as the tradewinds blow through my hair taking with it all the cares and worries that I brought with me. Ahh Aruba. ;o)

My 2 favorite things. First: It's always 85 and sunny.
Second: The only decision I make is: "What time do I start drinking?"

What do I like about Aruba?
First of all the people, followed by feeling safe everywhere on the entire island no matter what time of day/night it is.

Second, all the dive sites. beautifull waters, fishes, wrecks, seaturtles, clear waters.

The little bar at the end of the pier, near the hotels, great music, cool winds.

And again, the people and the hospitality, they make you really feel welcome.

Already planning for my 3rt trip next year.

NOSTALGIA!
I was born at the beach (Long Beach, CA), raised at the beach (Monterey Bay, CA) & grew up in La Jolla, CA in the 60's & 70's.
My family re-located to mid-America in the mid 80's (excruciatingly long story) & remained ever since. Aruba's desert & sea-scape are reminiscent to the San Diego experience. This is why Aruba is so precious to us....it is a reminder of our previous experiences.

There's not much one can add to this 'survey'. The people...without a doubt!
The weather
The choice of dining places
The relaxation that the island offers
The feeling of 'belonging'

Can't wait to experience all of these things again!!!

The main reason to visit Aruba is to visit the family.
Another positive thing: Amstel Bright. (Please do not tell my partner)
I can’t wait to get back and get a nice cold Amstel Bright.

For some reason Heineken do not sell Amstel Bright in Holland.

And okay. The weather is great, the people are friendly and lovely, and the beaches are so nice.
