Default mirrors? a warning

one of my friends is a retired cop. he sent this to me today. thought it could be important to all of us.

Two-way mirrors
How can you tell when you are in a room, restroom, motel etc. with a Mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here's how:

I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds
you're going do what I did and find the nearest mirror....

Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not?

This is not to scare you, but to make you aware. A policewoman who travels all over the

U.S. and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you

know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror,

or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e., they can see you, but you can't see them)?

There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms.

It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it.

So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?

Just conduct this simple test:

Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your

fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.

However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE,

FOR IT IS a 2-WAY MIRROR!

"No Space, Leave the Place" So remember, every time you see a Mirror, do the "fingernail test."

It doesn't cost you anything.

Remember: "No Space, Leave the Place"

Sherry, I want to thank you for that wonderful information. Next time I go to any of the places mentioned, I will do the fingernail test for sure.

Unfortunately, the "fingernail test" is flawed: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/mirror.asp

thanks chip!

funny thing is that i have been driving this guy crazy telling him to check things with snopes. the last few i didn't bother to check since he promised he would. i now get to yell at him. now i see why people say 'never trust a cop', lol.

Sherry,

It's not completely erroneous, just not foolproof. Snopes has some good information on things you should look for if you're concerned that it might be a
2-way mirror versus a normal one.

Where I work I spend a good deal of time policing these types of emails that get forwarded to everyone in our company, so I kind of have an eye for those that seem odd, shall we say. I too encourage people to check Snopes before forwarding these messages on to others, but it's an uphill battle sometimes!

No harm no foul. A little extra precaution never hurt anyone, but I'd hate for someone to make a scene in a public place because the bathroom mirror didn't pass the "fingernail test".

my cop friend is probably not speaking to me any more since i chastised him, lol. he also got the lecture about forwarding emails with 30 addresses showing instead of 'bcc'.

as i said, i usually do check snopes... if i get one more about what george carlin said that he never said, i will scream, lol.
