I see so many people who love the Flying Fishbone. We've haven't been there in a long time. But, there's a place called Brisas del Mar in Savaneta that we love even better. Has anyone else been there? We've been going for 10 years and just love it. It's also on the beach. It has a great selection of food, although the menu does not describe the food at all. It's actually kind of comical - it just says, shrimp, scallops, etc. but the waitstaff does a fair job of describing it to you. And the food is very well prepared, prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable just as much for 2 people as for 6. Definitely not for those in a rush, but who cares? So if you love the Flying Fishbone, we recommend Brisas del Mar. We think you'll like it as much as we do.

We enjoy it very much and try to go whenever in Aruba. All the food is excellent. I have fish and my grandchildren have beef which is usually too much for them to eat (I have their leftovers for lunch). A very good way to spend a night out because it's quite a distance and you do wait for your food, but as you said, who cares, it's worth it. Service is excellent.

My Mom and I ate there last Nov 05 on a Sunday evening. We made reservations for 6 pm so we could enjoy the sunset, and were the only guests until another couple arrived about 20 minutes later. It DOES look kind of crummy from the street side, but the food was good. Three-course special included appetizer, main course and dessert for $19.95 (then). I had the equivalent of flan (forgot what it was called); excellent. Mom had the cheesecake--so, so.
This past May, was on a snorkeling trip and met some local Arubans (transplanted Dutch) who didn't then much of Brisas--said it was for tourists. Has anyone eaten there recently?
By the way, they're closed Mondays.

our last night and our only dinner repeat. joanne and marty had never eaten by water's edge before so off we went to about the best meal we had all week. i had salad, the rest had dutch pea, cream of seafood and fisherman's soup. main courses were garlic shrimp, red snapper with garlic sauce, red snapper topped with crab meat and the mixed fish platter. the platter included my first aruban fish cakes. they were great. with a side order of pan bati and a visit aruba card discount the bill was $99. i wish i could vote again to give it another excellent.

After reading the excellent reviews, we were very disappointed. We ate there last week and the food was cold and average at best. There were 4 of us in the party and no one was very impressed with their meal.

It is a lovely setting for a sunset, but if you are looking for good food as well, I'd rather pay the extra $'s and go to Flying Fishbone.

Earlier this year we did go to Brisas and indeed the service and food was not much to brag about. My understanding of it was that the owners are going thru some rough times with the restaurant. I think they were even thinking of selling it.

We feel the same way Sherry. We hope the best for them and hope they can get everything together. The owners are grand parents themselves. Brisas Del Mar is an old restaurant that provides the traditional Aruban dishes in the traditional way. We have been going there for many many years and the food was excellent. But indeed quality has suffered last that we went. No doubt it deserves a second chance. These people have always worked hard to maintain it at the top.

When I was in Aruba in May/June, I heard that they did sell the restaurant. The new owner is Dutch, and evidently has a good reputation with restaurants. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Yes indeed. They were great hard working people who ran that restaurant for many many years. I'm sad to hear that they've sold it.

The new Brisas del Mar is scheduled to open this Sunday, Nov. 4th. Hours are lunch: 11 am-3 pm and Dinner 5-11 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Having fallen in love with the old, quaint Brisas Del Mar restaurant in Savaneta, Dutch business partners Hans Veenhuysen & Robert Nieland decided to make the purchase. They bought the seaside building and decided to shut the restaurant down, renovate completely and reopen in the fall.

Seafood lover from all over the world have enjoyed a more than thirty years relationship with the famed restaurant. The excitement of the drive, the entrance way with thousands of business cards, the fragrant indoor restaurant and the breezy outdoor terrace were all part of the Brisas del Mar experience, enhanced by delicious Fish Aruban Style, Keri Keri, baby shark, lobster tail, the Brisas Special, and the Commandeurs Dish, which were perennial favorites. Visitors and locals found King Neptune hard to resist—fish filet stuffed with crabmeat in a mouthwatering sauce which originated in Lucy and her daughters, Evelyn and Marchita’s kitchen.

The new edition of the old favorite says Willeke will maintain many of the original platters prepared by Jamaican-born chef Lakie P. Richards, a Caribbean cuisine specialist with over eight years in Aruba. Lakie, explains Willeke is a Fish & Pasta expert, who also has a special way with pastries and cakes, as well as a number of years as catering chef under his belt. Warm and energetic Lakie brings his natural enthusiasm to the kitchen and the menu.

Maren Knooren, the restaurant’s Dutch-born assistant manager with years of restaurant management experience is a very motivated lady, who also knows her way around the bar. She promises an exciting bar & drink menu.

Visitors and local who travel to the new Brisas del Mar will be rewarded with tranquility and stylishness at a seaside lounge, where they can sip good wines and nibble on delicious tapas, fresh fish and interesting dishes all day long without ever moving from their comfortable chaises!

Brisas del Mar is planning on going beyond food and offer a total experience, with music and ambiance.

The major renovations were aided by the professional eye of Jani Croes, a local architect/designer/artist, they were inspired by the latest Spanish and European trends aiming at bringing together locals and visitors in a typical Aruban atmosphere with a contemporary twist.
