Default Another fatal accident by the RIO/Mill

There was another fatal accident at the same spot there have
been 3 so far this year. It's the intersection of the highway
where the old Rio steakhouse was (by the mill resport).

Again - 2 motorcycles (looks like drag racing down the
high way) and a car.

Be very careful at that spot!!!

Here are pictures. Caution they are graphic:

How sad.

Having just come home, I can tell you from first hand experience that the speeding is awful. One night in particular a car passed us doing at least 100 miles an hour... Courtesies that were once extended by "A" tag drivers seem to have gone by the wayside, and I saw more and more aggression by Aruban drivers then ever before.

A friend of mine who's been going to Aruba for almost 30 years, and always rented a car made the decision not to rent this year because of all the accidents being reported.

Motorcyclists here are the worst. They think the white line in the middle of the road is their lane. Would love to see helmut laws passed here. I cringe when I see someone on a motorcycle, ATV or other off road 'thing' wearing a tshirt, shorts and flip flops. I know that some states don't have the helmut laws either but the way they drive here, they could use it!

But to be young and think you are immortal.

I have seen lately when you are at the McD's light that traffic does
drive a little slower until up past the Rio and then all bets are off.

well, it is always summer here... i am not wearing closed shoes unless they pass a law about it...
going back to the horrible accident, i know when they are riding over 60 miles per hour and without helmets.... the result is almost always fatal....

It's a shame that when many people really endeavor to obey the laws; watch out for the welfare and safety of others; that others are determined to show off or just be reckless with no regard for others. More often than not, as we all know, the innocents end up suffering; while the others just seem to go on their merry way with little or no consequences.

Just an opinion.

Hi Liz,
How terrible!!!! I always rent a car while in Aruba. This year, however, I cut down the amount of time I had the car. Driving during the daytime was not so bad, but I experienced much speeding around me at night. I also notice a lack of police presence.
There seems to be no regard to consideration of laws of the road. I have always said, "I have a 'v' plate so 'a' drivers will be respectful (for their sake as well as ours)----however, that premise appears to have gone by the wayside.

Yes, you do! When you visit us on the beach you are always carrying your helmet.

The pictures looks very awful and horrorable!

I always wear my helmet (see picture) when riding my bike. In the Netherlands you have to wear a helmet by law!

Like Mafada says, there is most definitely a helmet law. Too bad the police don't really enforce it or fine someone if he drives without.

For some ATV & Motorcycle rentals you see helmets but for
others you don't see people in helmets. You would think
the rental companies would have to abide by the law.
That's too bad that it's not enforced. Could save or
prevent a lot of injuries.

liz, i honestly think it's not the rental companies but the renters. they throw caution to the wind figuring that it is safe. giving someone a helmet doesn't mean they will wear it.

My pick for most aggressive and speedy drivers are the taxis!
When I am driving, they are the 'first' out of the light
and cut people off by crazy! When I see the TX license
plate, I get into the slow lane and get out of their way!

And don't get me started on tailgating!

It's stange, because....

... when I was on Aruba driving a car was very relaxed and nobody was in a hurry, that's how I felt it at that time.

(I rented a Dodge Caliber and normally a car has Horsepowers(HP), this one had Cowpowers, because it sounds like a cow when you accelerate.)

When I came back in the Netherlands it felt like that everyone was in a hurry and every driver wants to go faster than any other driver. And everybody is switching from lanes like a foolish.

I can tell you that i'm not looking forward to driving back in
the US with the 4 lane mega highways! But i'm told that
i'll be fine! Also will have to get used to the distances.
10 mile drive here is considered a 'long' trip! LOL!

I Love Aruba Re: Another fatal accident by the RIO/Mill

I was out with an Aruban/Dutch couple one evening last month, and I just about had to use a ladder to climb into the back of an SUV he recently purchased. Because of all the accidents he said he wanted to have "more iron" surrounding him, and his wife. And, as I said in another post.... he makes sure that everyone in his vehicle is seat belted.

We had dinner at Bingo's, and as we made the right out of the parking lot to go down the road back to my timeshare, a car coming from the other direction decided traffic wasn't going quickly enough. The car pulled around the car in front of him, and had my friend not literally stopped, it would have been a head-on. The guy zig zagged at a high rate of speed to get back into his own lane while passing other cars. It was frightening.

In all the years I've been traveling to the island, the lack of courteousness, and speed has never been more prevalent, and scary. In my case, it was never a taxi driver who was a maniac, and I took lots of taxis. It was plain old Aruban drivers in a very big hurry seemingly to like laying rubber, and speeding.

Just to fill everyone in on what happened to the Franken family.
Please correct me if i'm wrong - this is what I have heard and
translated off the web -

Dad was driving with his car with his 2 kids. Car tire blew up
he started spinning and another car hit him broadside. Dad
and his kids were killed.

This happened on the road going from the airport to SN -
exact spot - not sure.
