Default Did you ever wonder? A trivia question

Here's a trivia question for y'all.

You know when you drive to Baby Beach, you get to San Nicolas, you go up a hill then turn right and drive in a straight line through a residential area along the old refinery wall (this is the area known as Lago Heights)? At the end of the row of houses, the road then makes a 90 degree turn to the left, goes straight for a couple hundred yards, then makes two 90 degree right turns, followed by another 90 degree left turn and proceeds along in a straight line again till it reaches the "T" intersection by the big anchor. Did anyone ever wonder why the road makes that abrupt series of turns, and why it doesn't just go straight?

I'll post the answer to this piece of useless trivia later.

And the answer is...

The road zags around the place where one of the island's caliche pits used to be. Caliche is a sort of natural cement that was quarried at a couple of different locations near the southeastern tip of the island (the other location is to the right of the road leading into Seroe Colorado after turning at the anchor and going over the grates). Don't know when the pit was filled in but I know it was sometime after 1972.
