Unhappy Chez Matilde is Closing

I read this on another board.... Sad to see a landmark will be no more.

Chez Matilde announced that after almost 24 years in business, they are closing effective September 20th.

Never got to try Chez Matilde. But I still dream about Boonoonoonoos' Jerk Ribs. It was our favorite place for both food and atmosphere. I wonder who the chef was there and if he's still around someplace.

I too am very sorry to hear Aruba is losing a very special restaurant. Although I haven't eaten at Chez Mathilde for several years I know others who love it.

My wife and were on a trip to Aruba about 5 years ago in late November and did a Nouveau Beaujolais wine dinner event at Chez Matilde (That wine is only released in France at that time of year). They started at an art gallery, where a local artist who at the time was painting naked women and then had them roll around on the canvas, rather strange art as I recall. They served some of the newly released wine and had some tasty hors d'oeuvres. Then we all walked together a few blocks to the restaurant complete with a jazz band accompanying us. Dinner was wonderful, 4 or 5 course each with a different Nouveau Beaujolais wine! It was very reasonable, like $75 per person.

2 days later at our hotel I saw the local Aruba news paper's front page story on the event and I was in the picture. It was my Andy Warhol moment of fame!

Well, I guess differing opinions is what makes the world go 'round. We went to Chez twice in 17 years. We went about 12-13 years ago and the service was quite poor, the food incorrect (1st time) then cold (2nd try) after we told them they brought us the wrong order. We didn't go back again for several years. Second try just a few years ago: Service marginally better but the food was, as best I can describe it......garbage. (I am actually being kind) So, when we heard Chez was closing we thought; wow, did it really take this long!? As I said, just our personal experience.
