Default Drugs

Never have been to Aruba, and hoping I will not be bothered to buy marijuana like in Jamaica.

Well you won't be bothered with it but if you are asking is it on the Island The answer is Yes. I find the best thing to say if offered is no thanks and walk on by

Wink Re: Drugs

Lived there from 93-99 and NEVER was approached about buying drugs, but as mentioned above, it does exist......guess working at the Queen Beatrix Airport for the U.S. Immigration/Customs made me a unlikely candidate for approaching.....hee hee, but I know alot of people who never have been approached and say that in Jamacia and the Bahamas and the US Virgins, they were bothered daily to buy drugs.......Aruba works VERY HARD at keeping drugs very low key......being only 12 miles from Venezuela and Colombia they have their work cut out for them......unfortunately.

---- You will not be bothered in Aruba to buy anything like in Jamaica. Second time cruising at Jamaica we didn't even get off the ship.

I Love Aruba Re: Drugs

When we can't find a parking space and park behind the bus terminal downtown so that we can walk to Iguana Joe's or The Paddock, we cut through the bus station and are sometimes approached by guys riding bicycles asking us if we want to buy drugs. We are not kids, so they must just approach everybody and hope (I'm guessing) that someone might be interested. For them it's just a numbers game. We just shake our head NOOOOOOOOOO and keep walking, and they leave us alone.

Have never been approached to buy drugs in 6 trips to Aruba. Was in Jamaica less than an hour when approached.

The cool thing about Aruba is there is a wide range of culture. Walking around and dinning out you hear many languages spoken. You can use this to your advantage in this area. If you are ever offered anything which will not be totally likely just ignore it and keep walking. They will assume you don't speak the language.

Default Re: Drugs

My take on things and without any finger pointing since there are wonderful folks that get asked for their drug needs all the time

I am remiinded of a comment made to me when I was 18. A young lady told me I had the look of a person on the prowl. I WAS.
That said;
  • Drugs exist
  • Drug sellers exist
  • Drug users exist
  • Drug sellers have a knack for knowing who is in need.(with exception and mistakes - of course)
It is a situation as old as the bible and yet continues to be surprising

be well
charles

What I meant by that in Jamaica you are hounded to buy from just about everybody trying to sell something/anything(belts, shirts, watches, rings, ......). You can say no and walk away and they will follow you.
Went on a 2 week cruise out of England in September and visited just about every country on the Baltic. Walked around, no hounding, vendors would answer questions; no problems. One of the best vacations/visits we had in years. People nice everywhere. Even in Russia. Pretty country side all along the Baltic. People in Russia and Estonia may not like each other but Americans were liked by all.

Gee, it sounds as bad as Venice Beach!

Seriously, tho, in parts of California, at least, this kind of behavior is pretty ubiquitous.

Only thing we have ever been approached to buy in Aruba is timeshares. 12 trips, drug free.
Las Vegas is a different story though. Been asked several times and saw a lot of it. We were there with some friends of ours about 10 years ago(their first time to Vegas)We took the bus downtown from the strip. There were several drugged up and drunk people on the bus. When we got off the bus it is a 2 block walk to the main street and it is dark along there. The one friend of mine is Cherokee indian and has a beard and long hair. He is also a DEA agent in Oklahoma. Two guys came up to us and asked my friend if he wanted to buy any weed or crank. He told him no, but maybe the next night same time same place. Then after we got into town he called somebody local and told them about the arrangement. Dont know if anything ever happened.

Never been asked. This is the reason we will never go back to Jamaica and the Bahamas (Freeport and Nassau).

I just spent 10 days in Jamaica. In the cab from the airport to my resort, I was offered drugs. At every intersection when teh car was stopped, I was offered drugs. On the beach every day, I was offered drugs.

Jamaica is a beautiful island - hands down it has more eye-pleasing sights than Aruba. But I never left the resort unescorted.

In all my trips to Aruba, I have been offered drugs once. For what it's worth, he was very polite - that may sound funny, but just wait until you come face to face with an agressive pusher. Scary, unforgettable.

Because Aruba is comparatively prosperous, poverty is minimal and therefore so is the drug trade and crime in general.

That is crazy, and it has to stop. Did you report that to the security guard of the hotel?

I certainly did Eddie. I am returning March 2nd and I am very interested to see if I will be approached again. We own the beachfront Lanai right on the sidewalk at Playa Linda and there has always been someone camped out right there offering....when they get "chased" by our security, they walk about 20 feet onto the HI property and ask everyone there instead of in front of our unit.

It depends how old you are, if you are like 40+ then the chances are nobody will ever bother you to buy drugs.

If you are under 30 then there is a good chance you might be approached at least once during your stay. However in Aruba they don't see to be pushing marijuana that much, every time someone has offered me something in Aruba it was Coke that they were trying to sell.

The times I was approached it was in the evening in the downtown area near Carols and Charlies. I haven't been approached elsewhere on the island.

Overall I wouldn't worry about it, compared to most islands it really is a non-issue, I have been to other islands where it is way, way worse.
