Default hi from aruba

well here we are... finally got on line. totally exhausted. been up since a little past midnight and it is now nearly midnight again. flights were on time and i must say first class really is first class, lol. almost as good as non american airlines in their cheap seats.

traffic jam galore. they had the roads blocked off into town due to political rallies for the 9 political parties. took us 90 minutes to get to costa linda from the airport.

got to meet up with lora and doug. off to dinner at wacky wahoo. wonderful meal. murray had grouper and i had red snapper. both were aruban style. we also had salads and beverages for a grand total of $62+tip. it was a great way to start the vacation with great people.

on the way out of the marriott murray and i decided to hit the casino. 30 minutes later we walked out ahead for the day.

now i am going to sleep. murray already is asleep. 23 hours is more than enough to be awake.

Hi Sherry

Pleased to hear that you and Murray made it safe and sound.

I am a little concerned however. I know you both have pretty active lives at home and that sitting at the beach you will probably get bored real fast. To assist you, I have come up with several on island activities for you both. I am sure there are others on the board who can give you a bunch of suggestions as well. Here goes:

Catch and weigh as many Iguanas as you can to determine the average weight of an Arubian Iguana

Visit the Balashi Brewery and determine the number of beers produced per hour. Separate numbers needed for cans and bottles.

Snorkel of Boca Catalina and count the number of Barracudas around the cruise boats

These, amongst other facts will be very beneficial as I do not see any reference to these facts on the CIA's facts on Aruba webpage

https://www.cia.gov/library/publicat...k/geos/aa.html

Hope these suggestions help with the boredom. Anyone else have a few for Sherry and Murray

So happy to hear you and Murray made it safely, even if a bit exhausted. Now you have plenty of days to "catch up" and relax. Enjoy every bit of sunshine and breeze while there.

Glad you had a safe arrival and hope you have an absolutely great stay in AUA!
I'm not sure about your comment about airline seats.
Are you revealing (did you reveal) your flight details?
Was it true "first class"?
Last year and this year (in September), we decided to try Spirit's "big front seats".
They are the size of first class (2 seats in a row - instead of 3), but they are not in a separate section. I think there are 10 of these big seats on a flight (2 rows on one side, 3 rows on the other side), but right behind you are people in the coach section (3 seats per row).
Anyway, enjoy your stay and let us know all the details!

really first class. we couldn't get our freebies in coach on airmiles and had to spend double which wiped them out but saved us money. first time in first class. loved it. but never fear, we will be back where we can afford next visit.

it's really funny that some of our best days on aruba are days where we don't even walk near a beach. yesterday was one of them.

i actually started the day off a little grumpy because my phone hadn't been working. i was dreading the wait at setar where the lines are usually long and slow. to my surprise, with at least 10 people in front of me it took 30 minutes to get the help i needed. then we were off to pick up lora and doug from the surf club and start our day as tour guides.

first stop was linda's pancakes. yum! some things just never change. we love their food. i had the strawberries and whipped cream pancake. murray had brie, walnut and honey.

then the mini tour started. we went from lighthouse to 'the new baby natural bridge' as the sign said. murray drove like a dirt bike racer but we survived without bruises, lol. then off to lings which is always fun.

after a short nap it was time to meet with doug and lora again to have an amazing evening. we had been invited to a food tasting. as you who are regulars here know, ommi is reopening cooks in a few weeks. the four of us plus a few well known chefs were invited to taste some of ommi's new creations and critique them. we spent several hours being wined and dined. i actually had more drinks than i have ever had in one evening and somehow managed to stay sober. now to the food, we tasted everything from fish to lamb to beef. my only problem was when i realized i would not be on aruba again to taste these marvels until next year. i honestly think i tasted some of the best foods i have ever eaten in a life long romance with food. all agreed, as we wrote down our opinions of each plate, that everything was nearly perfect. even the the pickiest of critics there found few if any flaws. cooks is opening september 5th. go there and enjoy. you won't be disappointed.

now off to the beach...

Good morning Sherry,

I'm glad you all made it safely back to the hotel. I had a wonderful evening last night serving all of you there.

Last night was very important for me and a sign that everyone who will visit Cooks Restaurant will get nothing short of excellence. Last night I brought some of the best and keenest food critics together to critique my food. After reading all the critiques I felt amazing, because when the lowest rating I got was EXCELLENT, I knew I did good. Now I'm so excited that I can't wait for September 5th.

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of the food critics who attended last night's tasting in preparation for our re-opening day September 5th.

Now I will be going to take a long nap since I couldn't sleep all night last night. I was too happy and excited to do so last night.

Talk to you all tomorrow morning.

Sherry..that sounds like a tough job..but somebody has to do it right??
So, after all that high praise... since Cook's was already on the short list of new places to try, it is now a very high priority on the list of to do restaurants for September....I am so looking forward to it!!!

Enjoy the beach... looks like it'a a picture perfect day according to the webcam.

As far as I'm concerned, Cook's was already "perfection," and I look forward to visiting with my friend Ommi again in February!

Did you have that green drink, sherry???

Well, since Sherry seems to be doing all of the work, I guess I don't have to write much! (ha...like that will happen!) We had never been to Wacky Wahoo's before, and had a great dinner on Friday night. I loved their salsa that they served with the grouper, I could have eaten that with a spoon!

As for Cooks last night.....I really don't think I can find the words. We have eaten at wonderful (and famous) restaurants from one end of the country to the other, and I can honestly say that last night's tasting meal was one of the finest I have EVER had anywhere! And I am not just saying that because I think Ommi will read this....it really truly was amazing beyond words. Let me also confess that I am a picky eater. Really picky. I was a little worried about the menu, as I knew there would be things that I wouldn't normally order (ceviche and lamb, for example), but I promised myself that I would try everything and, as my dad always used to tell us, "Think of it as an adventure." I can honestly say that all of my plates went back to the kitchen empty - except I left the lamb bone. I know Doug was quite surprised on a couple of occasions, as he turned to me and said, ""You actually ate that?" For both, I just smiled, nodded, and said, "Yep. AND I LOVED IT!" (I think that he was secretly hoping I wouldn't eat it so he could have mine too...) So, in conclusion, thanks again to Ommi for being such a gracious host and for his generosity, and to everyone else - make your reservations NOW because Cooks will be PACKED the moment it reopens!

As for the rest of yesterday, we had never been to the north side of the island. Wow, was that awesome. I got some great pictures and will try to post them later. Today, so far, has just been another lazy day in paradise....I went to the spa in the morning, then we relaxed by the pool. Now I need to figure out what Sherry and Murray have in store for dinner....

Lora

PS - the whole chair situation at the Surf Club continues to be a challenge. They are still issuing chair tags, as they were when we were here in March. It's a decent plan in theory, but the tags all look the same and no one can remember their numbers. (I, of course, learned my lesson in March and brought bright red nail polish and put big red Xs on ours....) Some people have no shame - one lady near me today sat down in a chair in the sun and then went and tagged another one with the blue shade things that you pull up. When I gave her my "Mommy Look" she just said, "Well, I'm going to need some shade too." That was the first time, so far, that I wished my kids would have been here, as I can only imagine what their responses would have been (and coming from them, would probably have been more forgivable than if I said the same thing!).

Well, Sherry isn't using anyone...I just talked to her and her internet isn't working right now. I am at the Marriott Surf Club, and all three Marriott properties have free internet service. I'm sorry, but I don't know who the provider is.

Thanks. I am thinking about using Setar during my next trip, but not sure how the signal is. The Divi has thier own, but in March we will be at the Holiday Inn one week and the Divi Village for 2. I would rather use Setar but there is no hot spot at the Divi's. Just hate to use 2 different providers. In Dec we will be in the Divi Dutch Village and may just use the Divi's ISP.

Hi All

Just got off the phone with Sherry - looks like both the Marriott and the
Costa Linda have not had internet access for the last two days.

Even the phone service right now is a little funky.

So don't worry if Sherry is "MIA" - she is going to the beach
today and hopefully will be wonderfully relaxed within the next
hour.

If anyone has anything urgent - please pm me and i'll make sure
she gets the message for now.

Did you fly American? If so, they have a lounge in the departure area for first/business class ticket holders. It has coffee, tea, juice, donuts, cookies and tv as well as couches. I know you dont want to think about departure yet, but when the time comes you will find it a little more comfortable than sitting in the "crying room".

the internet and phones are back finally. understand that setar is the major provider everywhere but some hotels add on their own fees. the internet was down or intermittent all over the island.

bob, thanks for the suggestion. we will probably follow it.

last night we went to french steak house. it was very good. the only problem we have is now we are comparing everything to ommi's tasting. murray and i had the keshi yena appetizer and salad, i had churasco and murray had filet. we both had apple strudel. i would rate it at least an 8 of 10. so unfair to rate any place the night after cooks, lol.

Arubabob- thanks for the heads up on the lounge for American. We flew first class this time as well (God bless frequent flyer miles) and will appreciate the non-crying room option! Not that I have ANY intention of thinking about departure yet.......

God bless people who are ABLE to use frequent flier miles.
My wife used hers one time on USAir for a domestic flight.
I used mine one time for a USAir flight to Aruba.
When my wife thought she had enough to fly to Aruba, they doubled the number of miles required from Florida. In the meantime, friends in New York have flown to Aruba two times for the old original amount.
We gave up on USAir.

Forgive the rant.

Keep telling us all the good things about Aruba.
We'll be there on September 12th...flying on Spirit.
(Spirit is another story. Some day, I hope, I can fly without complaints. So far, Southwest is the only contender.)

We have used FF miles for tickets the last 4 trips and did first/business the last 2 to Aruba and on the Maui trip.
The lounge has restrooms as well. Just show them your boarding pass at the door. I cant remember if its at gate 7 or 8, maybe in between. The ticket agent will tell you where it is. Thats another good thing about first/business class, you have your own check-in line. Not crowded, go right through. No bag charges either.

ok, let me clarify that. since we again had no internet last night (power went off and had to wait for someone to reset the internet) i was late with my reply.

so, last night was buccaneer and tonight is matthews. today we are spending with lizzardo and hubby, lora and doug, and will be meeting with aquarius (marie) at pbv along with mafalda. the translation of this is that we are busy as can be with totally fun things.

other than about a 30 minute rain storm the other morning, some computer off times and the short power outage, the weather has been great, the food has been wonderful and the company perfect.

when i actually have time and the internet is alive, i will post better descriptions of the meals on our sister website

Aruba Restaurants, Food and Dining Guide - ArubaRestaurants.com

don't forget that it is there and starting to get quite a few ratings.

I Love Aruba Re: hi from aruba

I thought Matthews WAS tonight!! lol Thanks for the clarification.

Please give Mafalda a VERY big hug for me.

Heck, Lora and Doug will need a vacation after vacationing with you!! lol

By the way, the Buccaneer's my favoriate restaurant for baracuda. I think theirs is the best, and when on vacation, my mindset is to not rush anything including service. One of the perks of being on the island is to slow my body and mind down... and, so what if the service is a little slow!

Keep on keepin' on!!

I think the Buccaneer gets mediocre reviews from those who don't mind paying twice as much for dinner. For years, I have thought that the "catch of the day" (often barracuda or wahoo) is one of the best deals on the island. If I recall correctly, it was $14 or $15 last year.

Last year, though, we did get a "hard sell" that the service charge is NOT a gratuity. We did leave something extra, but it wasn't another 15%.

i had someone give me a 'face' when i mentioned buccaneer. they must not have been there for a few years. we hadn't either because at one point they had gone downhill. they have definitely raised themselves up again into the quality range. all of us agreed it was great.

another perfect day on aruba. we spent the first part of the day with lora, doug, lizzardo and hubby. later we met up with aquarius (marie), her hubby john, and mafalda at pbv! we had never been on the property and agree that it is lovely and peaceful. if i needed another week i would easily rent there.

dinner was at matthews with lora, doug, barbiesara2003 and janet (a friend of several years). again, we neared perfection with attention, food, and view.

it was a decent night at the casino and we paid ourselves back on dinner (unlike the night before, lol). then back to costa linda where the internet was down again. thank goodness they are redoing it this month. i just wish they had started a few weeks ago.

today will be another adventure we are sure. we know some of what will happen but will save that for later.

another day, another restaurant, and another day that costa linda's internet dropped dead in the evening and didn't return until this morning. they really need to reset the modem before they leave.

last night was another amazing food night. we went to pirate's nest. chef matt took over there along with his partner jose, just 42 days ago and is busy perfecting his menu. he is coming very close to perfection. we easily all agreed it was 9.5 out of 10 and easily would be a 10 as matt gets time to create more.

the place looks awesome having been redone from floor to roll back tarp covering so you can dine outside even in the rain. it really is beautiful and the sunset was lovely to watch since you are not too many yards from the ocean.

i would easily add this to my must do restaurants each year. i already have my next main course picked out (red snapper).

now, i have to sneak in there and write down the names of our meals so i can actually sound intelligent when i tell you what we ate. that will go on our new website Aruba Restaurants, Food and Dining Guide - ArubaRestaurants.com when i get home and can combine my thoughts (and expect my internet to stay on long enough to write it, lol).

Had heard there was a new chef at Pirates Nest. Glad to hear food is excellent now. Always liked the location but not the food. Maybe they can take over the cooking at La Tratoria El Faro Blanco as well.

honestly? i am a slug in the morning. so is murray. we wake up, relax with coffee and don't leave the room until at least 9 or 10 am. at home we are up and busy at 6 am. vacation time is slug time.

my good intentions for the bucuti cam have stayed only in my mind every year, lol.

yesterday was another do nothing day. it's important do nothing so that you can remember it when you are busting your behind at home. dinner was at elliotti's for dinner. it was amazing and totally wonderful. we decided at dinner that we had to rate it a 9.7 out of 10. not sure why we reduced it .3 since it was about as near perfection as possible. i think we were having fun with the rating system and decided that really no restaurant should get a 10 except that food testing by ommi of cooks. murray had the lasagna that was the best we ever ate (yeah, i tasted it) and i had the penne arrabbiata which is supposedly an appetizer but our waitress (who was spectactular) said was more than enough for a main course and she was right. it was also perfect. it would not break my heart to return there during week two.
