Default parking?

Hi all, My husband and I will be coming to Aruba this Sat (May 15) and we are trying to decide whether or not to get a car. We are staying in a small cabana near Mangel Halto. As part of this discussion, I mentioned to my husband that one of the guide books said it was difficult to find a parking space in Oranjestad. I think that at the most we might go there one day, but he is worried about parking and then the cost. Can anyone give me an idea is this is a problem and what is the cost to park? Also, do you think we might need a car for the week or can we get by with maybe 3 days for exploring?

Thanks for your help.

Rae

hi rae. welcome to the forum.

parking is free downtown and yes it is difficult, but not impossible, to get a parking space.

if you are staying near mangel halto, there is very little besides snorkeling to do. you will need transportation of some sort to move around the island because nothing but your cabana, maybe a small grocery and the water awaits you where you are staying. i would suggest getting the car for at least a few days. that way you can get into town, tour the island, get to a larger grocery and get to some restaurants.

Hello Rae,

I agree with Sherry, you will probably need a car to get around Parking is usually not a problem this time of year. We go in June and never have an issue finding spaces downtown. Our first time we went was in mid May, and it was very easy to find parking and to get around.

Have a wonderful vacation

We stayed at the Seabreeze Apt's(down the block from Mango Halto beach).

Yes,rent a car and keep it the whole week.Even if you dont go out a day or two having the car is a big convenience.
Come and go as you please and explore anytime. If you want to go to the hi.rise area any night or day you will have the car right there.

Parking, never really had a problem downtown.
If the most popular spots are full(Rennissance/Seaport Marina) you can always use the lot behind the bus term.

Good luck and have a GREAT time!!!

We travel in September...for over 20 years.
Some parking spots we used have been paved over...no longer available.
In recent years, if going to downtown, we aim for the area shown above...behind the Seaport Casino/Seaport Cinemas area.
Driving is more hectic...given the fact that it is a fairly small island with more and more cars.
You're staying in the area south of the airport. It would be easier to use public transport if you were staying north of the city...in the low-rise or high-rise areas. I would say that a car is a true convenience (bordering on necessity) where you are staying.

Never had problem parking. Some time had to check by the Seaport and no spots. Then to lot behind bus terminal. If parking in the lot behind the bus terminal, be careful to observe street signs. There are some streets that are buses only. They have large depressions in the middle of the road to keep cars from getting by.
