Default Questions regarding packing...

Hi, all.

We are counting down to go down to the island. 11 days left !!! Got some questions regarding packing.

1. Long pants: Do we ever need them? We won't go to top of the line luxury restaurant 'cause we have two kids. If there some chilly air in the evening, we might pack some, but otherwise we do not want to. let me know if we need jackets too.

2. Mosquito repellent: Do we need to bring those? Or simply buy those there when needed. We have some Offs, but I don't know if those work just fine against mosquitoes down there.

Thanks.

Brian

You DO NOT need long pants. Even in the nicer restaurants such as Madam Janett's and Driftwood men were wearing nice shorts with either polo or short sleeved shirts. My husband took some pants and never wore them. I did take some casual Capri's and wore them in the evening. I took a sweater the first few nights to wear in the AC but did not need it.

If the tradewinds are in you will not need the bugspray. When we were there the tradewinds were sucked out by a storm over Venezuela and I was glad I had thrown in the bugspray.

Have a great trip!

I second that! No pants! It is pretty warm and humid at night. One pair of dress shorts for you and maybe capris for your wife (girlfriend?). I have never needed bugspray but others have. Why not take it just in case?

I Love Aruba Re: Questions regarding packing...

>>> "I have never needed bugspray but others have."
--- Ditto in 17 trips. But you never know so bring some.
There are 2 fine restaurants that say long pants for the men. But for most nice shorts and a polo shirt for the man. Most would be any beach front/outside and othere like Madame Janette, Driftwood, Gasparito, El Gaucho, ....
If going to Church then bring a pair.

First trip to Aruba we both packed long pants and never wore them. We never went to those 2 restaurants that require men to wear long pants and a sports jacket and women to wear dress or pantsuit????? Do not know names of these places. So we never packed long again. I do, (being female), however bring one light weight sweater which I wore only in casinos as their a/c is set so low and I am cold blooded, my husband does not bring either jacket or sweater. As for bug spray, we needed some last trip to MJ's, mosquitoes were deadly. They now make a very small container one can put in a purse. We were either in our swimsuits or shorts and tops. Have a wonderful trip!!!!!! We have to wait until December.

A jacket in Aruba??????? Only time we have ever seen a jacket is on a European man. Jackets went the way of the wind years ago. The two restaurants that require long pants just so you know are: Chez Mathilde and Le Dome for inside dining. Other than that nice casual is the way to go.

They also make a wipe, like the wet naps, easier packing, didn't need them this time, it all depends on the breeze.

Pants are a waste of valuable luggage space.

This year I did not even pack 1 pair of blue jeans. I took lots
of shorts, golf style, pockets front and back, button and zipper,
not athletic slip on work out. Lots of polos and light materialed
print shirts.

Relax, your on vacation.

ps. never needed bug spray, just some plenty sun screen.

later,
millertime

That is soo true. We wore pants that zip off the at the knees, so we had shorts\pants......but only zipped the legs back on just before our plane landed in Montreal. (April) we didn't do any horseback riding in the end.

If you are planning to visit a church PLEASE wear long pants. I find it so disrespectful seeing people in shorts in church.

And maybe one for a fancy restaurant???????????

Jan, last I knew God did not care if you wore shorts or long pants to church as long as you go. Of course, I would not recommend short shorts and sheer tops, but I am sure shorts and t-shirts are acceptable to him.

When we were there in April, I attended the Evangelical service at the chapel at La Cabana, wearing shorts and t shirt, but felt uncomfortable when I realised that the local people there were in their Sunday best. I felt like I had disrespected their congregation. my guide now is...what would I do at home?...and do the same on vacation....unless for some reason this is not culturally acceptable. The people there made me feel welcome....it was my own conscience bothering me.

I won't answer the question in regards to the the pants as it seems you have a consensus on that. But I will chime in on the bug spray. Mosquitos love me. And I don't care where I go. I orderd some Skin so soft bug repelent wipes from Avon. They worked great. I only used them if we went out for the evening. I did get bit once. So for me that was a blessing. Many people just don't get bit, but I do. So to be on the safe side I would get some spray. Believe me the two things that can ruin Aruba are a sunburn and bug bites.

This is true! When we go in April, we attend San Francisco church downtown on Easter. Only the American and Dutch men had shorts on. Everyone else was dressed nicely. The second year I went, my husband wore light weight linen pants to the service!

My husband use to get bit alot also. One time at a soccer game he had a halo of them following him. None even came close to me. This might sound strange but we decided it was because he drank so much coca-cola. He also sweats alot so we thought he may have been sweating out sugar. So the bugs thought he was sweet!

He does not drink so much coke anymore and he gets bit less. Kinda strange I know but it is true!

Why is it unrespectful. Does the bible say to wear nice clothing when you want to pray. Its the inside what counts....

It took me 10 minutes to write this post because I was staring at Blenchi's avatar!!!! thumbs up.

As for pants, I never thought of bringing them, but we went to Allegro years back and to eat in their fancy dining room/Italian, you needed pants. So I bought a pair down there. But I hate wearing pants, hatred so much, when I'm dead, I told them to bury me in shorts.

=====

If you're attending mass at a catholic church, wear long pants out of respect to the Aruban parishoners whose parish church you'll be visiting.

Either pack (or purchase when you get there) a 1 or 2 quart insulated bottle with a wide mouth (they sell some that come with a canvas carring case and a shoulder strap). Fill it with ice cubes from the hotel in the morning and you and the kids will have ice water wherever you go all day.

Tom as a child already I used to put a plastic bottle with some water into the freezer and had cool water. I still do it.
