Exclamation Restaurant Tipping Ettiquette & The "Service Charge"

Back in the US I have no problem tipping 20% or better if the service warrants it. As many here know all too well, there are many restaurants in Aruba that hit you with a 15% to 18% service charge. It has always been explained to me that this is a mandatory tip in which the entire staff shares in (cooks, host/hostess, dishwashers, serving staff, etc.) and NOT solely a tip for your server. The explanation continues on indicating that depending on the level of service your server provided, a separate tip for that "would be appreciated".

I don't want to punish the server for the policy of any given restaurant, but come on now.

Please share with me your perspective, experiences and practices regarding this. Thanx in advance -Z

Just my opinion if they add 15% to the bill:

If the service is awful...they get nothing.
If the service is good or better...add 5% or whatever you might add accordingly in US.

It is a constant bone of contention and discussion.
We have had service that was poor or mediocre and the 15% was added.
One time, we were told it was a "tax" and no service was included.
Another time, it said it was service and the waitstaff was rude and said that they got none of that.
The one place closed. We have not been back to the other (and they got a very little extra for their performance).

We can afford to be reasonable. But I'm not adding 30% above the bill.

To me, it really makes no difference whether they there's a 15% service charge on there or not. I leave 20% unless it is a complete disaster. If there's no service charge, I leave 20%, if there is one, I add another 5%. Simple as that.
