Default US Passport Expiration Question

We are leaving for Aruba on August 6th my daughter (she's 17) has a passport that expires mid - December of this year. The travel agent said she has to have 6 months left on it for Aruba. I called the US Passport place and they said it just has to be valid for the time of stay (we're only going for a week). I called the Dutch/Netherlands Embassy in DC and they said 3 months before expiration. So now I'm in a panic. Does anyone know the answer or have any experience?

Thanks,

Beth

Not sure, but either way, you should be OK; August plus 3 months equals November.

Why don't you just process an early renewal??

>>> "Does anyone know the answer"
---- She is OK ! Just read the Aruba Entry Requirements and she is OK.

http://www.aruba.com/sigma/Entry_Req-Eng.pdf
Can read that if you want written proof.
Just click on that address.

Don't worry about some of the requirements.
They just want to know where you are staying.
Guess they don't want people camping out.
Just have to write on the form you get from the airline where you will be staying and for how long.
Been coming for around 25 years and never a problem.

With such a short time before travel I would not try to get a new one by mail.
The last time I renewed mine by mail I had to send in the current one with the paperwork/photo. They send back the old one with holes in it.
I just read about renewing by mail and since she was under age getting a Passport she will have to do it in person this time. There are Passport Centers in some cities.
Reading what was said below why not call The U.S. State Department and your airlines and see if the 6 month rules is right about coming back into the States and getting on the plane. Aruba says she OK to come in.

Wink Re: US Passport Expiration Question

Beth;

Here s the answer as best as I can give it. As a former US Immigration Inspector who was stationd in Aruba...I can tell you the dutch consulate is correct, Aruba will accept entry on a passport with 3 months left before expiration date. Each country sets the rules. However, coming back to the USA is a different story as we require the passport to be valid upon entry to the USA for 6 months.

Now here is the problem, the airlies reserves the right to deny you to travel. They can not due to volume of travels keep the requirements handy for each county all over the world, so their rule of thumb is 6 months across the board.......get the passport renewed and save you vacation. No about o arguing ever seems to work at the airport, I have seen it all too often.

So spare your vacation and get the passport renewed. It's the best advise I can give you.

Folks, you can get a passport renewed in your city at the new passport centers, all major cities have them...or by mail it takes 4 - 6 weeks, plenty of time for a december trip......or you can get one in 3 days expeditied. I've done it all 3 wyas...no hassel at all.

Thanks everyone! I made an appointment for the US Passport Agency for Tuesday. I'm not sure how the US Passport Agency works in Chicago, but hopefully I can walk out with a new passport for my daughter!

My hubby and I had to get replacements for ours with only two weeks to spare when ours were stolen. We went to the Passport Office in person and were able to pay for an expedited process and received them within the week. Expensive, but worth it ! You have time. Definitely renew and avoid the possibility of missing a trip. Good Luck !

Question Re: US Passport Expiration Question

>>>> "avoid the possibility of missing a trip"
----- And remember to bring those "Passports" with you to the airport. Some get their Boarding Passes ahead of time and I know United call those people up to the counter next to the gate to see those Passports. Remember one year a person was late getting on the plane. Do not know what he didn't have but a couple of the gate people came on the plane asked him a couple of questions and then escorted him off the plane. They closed the door and off we went.
When we are goining out the door with our luggage on our trips my wife always says check your pants for the Passports and your wallet. If you forget something else(toothpaste/razor) you can get it in Aruba.

The former inspector is right! When you check in at the airline unless all requirements are met, the airline won't let you board. This includes passport expiration dates. Get the new passport!

Default Re: US Passport Expiration Question - visa pages

Another thing to remember, I think you have to have at least 2-4 blank pages in your passport, even if it's not close to the expiration date.

From the State Dept. FAQ
Q. How many blank visa pages do I need to travel>
a:Some countries require your passport have two (2) to four (4) blank visa/stamp pages. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement in not met. See Add Extra Pages for how to request more visa pages. It's $82 to add pages versus $140 to renew, but you still have to mail in your passport.
