Default What does Aruba need ??

Sitting here on a cold wintry and snowy afternoon, I started reflecting on my trips to Aruba. While reflecting on those trips and what we had done there, I started wondering the following.

" What do you miss in Aruba? What does Aruba need that isn't there today? ( If anything!!)"

Just a fun question, but maybe some folks have some great ideas.

Yeah If you have ever been to a real NY Deli you will know what sherry means I sure do.

As for other things well this will probably never happen as more space gets taken by development But Aruba needs more open space Less building on the Beaches.

>>> "What does Aruba need that isn't there today? ( If anything!!)"
---- 1. One thing it doesn't need is any new/bigger hotels/timeshares.
2. Cheaper airfare.
3. Beach protection! Built jetties were needed.

It needs a "stop" to all building that isn't at least 50% - timeshares
and places in the high rise area.

It needs a refurb of downtown to bring back the charm it once had

And it doesn't need hard rock cafes or bars w/ hot tubs!!!

Right now I think the most needed thing in Aruba is for past and present visitors to advocate how safe and charming the island is. To promote it in such away that more people will put it on there next place to visit.

Post your trip reports even if its your 10 th to Aruba, I think many do not post there trip reports because its old hat to them, boards like this is the best way to spread the word on what a wonderful place Aruba is that
we all enjoy visiting.

This would boost there economy and bring in much needed money for the residents of Aruba.

Ok guys. I agree a NY deli would be great. Since it would be in Aruba, I think we need to customize a menu. Lets have your suggestions for menu items....

Oranjestad Smoked Meat on Rye

Malmok Latkes

I think you get the drift. Just what can we put on the deli menu??

Well I am thinking that one of the best Fish dishes I had was at Manchebo with the grouper I would have smoked Grouper with lemon sauce and a touch of garlic on a roll with either cocktail sauce or wasabi sauce as the condiment.

How about a Churrasso steak sandwich with melted Gouda cheese on a roll.Since everyone has heard of the Philly Cheese steak sandwich This would be an Aruban Cheese steak sandwich and of course you can use the Gouda on Pastrami, salami or any of the other meats you have.

I still remember when Bononononos was around and I had their ribs dinner that was so good and spicy that If someone was to open a rib joint with that recipe that would be a major seller have that done on a push cart like in NYC with the shish kabobs you can do some good business.

Ditto! I miss the old downtown....the one where I could buy fresh fruit and shrimp right off the boats from the fishermen.

And even though I like NY delis, I will continue to go to NYC for those, not Aruba.

I dont think Aruba NEEDS anything. At this point, it actually needs to downsize imo. What Aruba NEEDS is to embrace its charm and heritage. Everything else will take care of itself.

Why would anyone want to bring a NY deli to Aruba, jump into your car and go up the road to our favorite deli and enjoy.

If you want to continue to Americanize Aruba isn't that the same as over building and all the post of the past how the Island a has change from years past, Most people go on vacation to get away from the daily life of our ways. If you want a New York deli go on vacation to NY city, or maybe Miami Beach you find your NY Deli that some snow-bird has set up. Keep the NY Deli in NY.

actually, i can't do it without driving 180 miles which takes me almost as long as a flight to aruba, lol. before most of you were coming to aruba there was a new york deli there as well as at least one ny style bakery. aruban's like food too and they like every type of ethnic food. these places were there well before most tourists and were started by locals or transplant citizens who had lived on the island for years. besides, there is actually a decent sized jewish population in aruba, some of whom have been residents since before we were born. they would like access to these foods. what is great is that they would take a ny style deli and transform it to ny/aruban as they have done with all other ethnic foods. check out the differences in chinese food on the island.

i will also say that they already sell most deli style foods but they taste rather crappy because no one does it like those who supply nyc. you might as well have the real thing so that the business survives hard times instead of something that gets shut down due to lack of taste. add some pan bati or funchi instead of fries and you have a true multicultural experience.

btw, i don't want to americanize aruba. i am dead set against it. if i had my way, i would strip out every fast food joint and american chain. i would remove all large hotel chains and i would eliminate 90% of the timeshares including my own. however the price of success in the tourism field is a sort or mutation that happens to anywhere that tourism flourishes. every tourist spot finds itself needing to conform to the tourist comfort zone. i don't care if it's aruba or senegal and i've been to both so i can compare.

i personally believe that the one criteria of what should be available is a survey of those that inhabit the place on a permanent basis. if they want it, it should be there. if they don't, it should not. believe me when i say that the busier burger kings and mcdonalds are not in the tourist areas. is that sad? maybe it is. but we all change to incorporate the things we experience.

Good point, but do you think the people in NY want half the crap that is there?? Times Square is filled with vacationing tourists, and the restaurants reflect their tastes, not ours.

Regarding NY deli or pizza - what I meant was a place to get just a good sandwich or slice of pizza for lunch. I can't afford to eat out lunch everyday and even a medium price restaurant like Rumba or Bingo adds up. The sandwich place in LaCabana is awful. We do buy groceries at Ling's. I heard Sbarros is coming to LaCabana so I will be satisfied with that!
