Default What are your Favorite CHEAP restaurants (not chains)

Leaving March 13 for almost 3 weeks with and 4 and 5 year old. This is our 4th trip, but hoping to find some new restaurants. KID FRIENDLY only

Here are our current favorite places:
Smokey Joe's
The Paddock (take out)
Cafe Plaza (kids can run around outside before dinner arrives)
Kings Ribs-my 4 year old could eat half a rack himself last year! Bring back to the room and eat on the patio-picky son gets Wendy's!
Tomato Charlies-the one in Tanki-Flip-they deliver and are cheaper and have different menu than the one in the high rise district

Hoping to try and would love opinions for:
Peanuts
Pam Pam
Linda's Pizza and Pancake

Please add restaurants and opinions!

We absolutely love Smoky Joe's!! So, we agree on that one. We also like Champions Sports Bar in the Ocean Club. It's very kid friendly.

Thumbs up Re: What are your Favorite CHEAP restaurants (not chains)

Hi there,

We go to both Pam Pam and Linda's at least twice a week when we are on the island. Both are very good and reasonable. Both also seem to be kid friendly. I would, however, keep and eye on the kids at Pam Pam as their is a pool close to the dinning area. . .

You may also want to ask the people atyour hotel were they go for a nite out. You would be surprised at the great food and very low prices at the little resturants off the main streets. . . . We love to try the little local places and have not been disappointed. . .

Tom and Pam

I'm glad to hear good things about Pam Pam and Linda's. Linda's seems really reasonable for pizza and I heard they use gouda-anyone know if it is thin crust?

I am also hoping Pam Pam has something for my picky 5 year old. My 4 year old will eat anything, but my 5 year old is SO picky.

I also just found a menu for Peanuts-I'd never heard of them, but the prices looked really reasonable!

There are quite a few places that I would consider Kid friendly in the shopping plaza by the renaissance. There is a Chinese restaurant (the owner was AMAZING with our daughter), dutch pancake house, Cafe Plaza. My feeling is anything that is outside with people walking by and noise is perfect for me.

We went back and fourth between Pizza Bob's and Tomato Charlie's. We just had some service issues with Pizza Bob's last year. 2x the pizza took an hour and a half to arrive when it was supposed to be half an hour. I understand island time, but my kids can't wait until 9 to eat

I'm glad you said that because I hadn't heard anything about Peanuts other than their own claim to be the best peanut sauce on the island! Do you know where it is? I love Salt and Pepper for the hot tapas and Tomato Charlie's is great. We also heard good things about Linda's and will try their pizza this year!

Peanuts is downtown, I know we passed right by it in the taxi ride to La Linda Department Store.

Also forgot to mention Bingo which gets rave reviews for lunch and dinner. http://www.bingoaruba.com/ Still trying to convince dh to give it a shot.

I think I have him convinced to try the Appetizer/Tapas night at the Promenade, but not sure how really "cheap" it is. Not that much anywhere is cheap anywhere.

Lisa, wanted to let you know we ate at BINGO'S just last week for dinner and it was exceptional. We all ordered different meals and all loved them.
Service was great also, and it is really a cool inside.

Peanuts is on Adriaan Lacle Blvd. before you get to El Gaucho's. It's across from Cooks Restaurant. When I was at Peanut's I asked asked the owners brother why the menu was only in Aruban money. He said they cater to the locals. Here's the menu in AWG and U.S. PEANUTS - MENU

Appetizer Night at the Promenade had been Wed. & Fri. nites. By popular demand, it is now every nite.
When I was there in last Sept. it was $27.95 or $29.95. Now it's $32. plus s.c. They might have a discount for kids, I doubt kids are free. I didn't see anything on their menu's.

I was looking at Peanuts menu and wondering if potatoe and vegi or salad are included when you order a fish or meat entree? There is no notation that they are included and I was wondering if you purchase them as side dishes.

I don't find a menu for them.....
however we ate lunch several times this past visit at the Piazza. Located in the Central Square of the Renaissance Mall. Everything we had was wonderful, and did not cost much! It is kid friendly.....and CLEAN!
If you give it a try I know you will like it as much as we did!

It sounds familiar, but I can't picture it. Does anyone happen to have a Jamaica Me Krazy menu WITH prices? I just wanted to get an idea what to expect!

I'm crossing Promenade off my list. It's just a little too much for us to spend with kids-if we may go to Sunset Bistro-when we stayed at the Phoenix we got their take out a bunch and ate on the balcony when the kids went to bed!

Looks like they are probably not included, check out the bottom right hand side "On the Side." But still, their prices are so reasonable for Aruba...

Also, Iguana Joe's, downtown is very popular
and it is kids friendly!
We only ate there once this past trip, and that was lunch.
We only did Salt and Pepper once this past trip also, and lunch.
When we found the Pizzza, we wanted it over and over again!
All three of these are reasonable.
We had a tad of disapointment in the Paddock this yr., which we have never experienced in yrs. past. We only went there once and decided not
to return.

We were in Aruba last january with our (then) 3 and 4 year old son's. We enjoyed Moomba's since our boys could play in the sand and the small playground next to the restaurant after they had finished. Gave us time to relax a bit.

And I know you said no chain's put the Pizza Hut near the high rise section was great since it had an enormous indoor playground attached to it. Our boys loved it!

Bobbie ~ I was at Promenade a couple weeks ago, and had the appetizers. It was $32.50, and worth every penny. They also asked what we'd like to drink, and it was on the house!!

Moomba's has different menu's for dinner and lunch. I don't think (but haven't tried actually) that you can order from the lunch menu at night.

The Indonesian buffet, the rijsttafel as we call it, is great but I must add that I am a great fan of Indonesian food. It has to do with the fact that there are some many Indonesians, and Dutch people who grew up in Indonesia like my late father, living in Holland since Indonesia became independent of Holland.

Promenade is excellent for either their appetizer night or fabulous Sunday brunch with unlimited Mimosas. I would NOT put them on the 'inexpensive restaurant' list, though! They were more reasonable when they were in San Nicolas a few years back and the menu was all in florins. The prices now are pretty much on par w/the others now.

The Promenade is a very good restaurant, one of my favorites, but I would not call it a cheap restaurant.

If you want cheap and good food, you can try Paris restaurant in the Wilhelminastraat. It's chinese food, but very different from what you get in the US. I think their most expensive dish is 29 florins. I always eat one of the cantonese dishes they have and it's 17 florins.

Do bring a sweater when you go there because according to good Aruban custom the restaurant is very cold!

The chinese place sounds great. I agree about Promenade-it sound really good, but with two kids it wouldn't be what I consider cheap-the old one in San Nicolas looked to be a lot cheaper. Do they have anything non greasy at the chinese restaurant? My husband doesn't eat any chinese food here because he gets sick from the grease I don't mind it myself

actually, i've never found chinese foods except for egg rolls and specifically fried foods greasy at all. they use very little oil. are you sure it isn't the msg or something of that type that causes it?

paris has a very extensive menu and some of the items are not chinese so hubby will have a choice.

I'm not sure what it is. It is pretty much guaranteed he'll get sick after he eats it though. He always gets sushi now when I get chinese because the restaurant near us has some japanese now too. This place sounds good though. Do you know how to get there?

i will leave the directions to someone else since although i know how to get there i don't know the street names. i really do like the place though.

it does sound like hubby has an allergy problem with the food. but at paris you can get several things including sandwiches that aren't chinese.

The food at Paris is not specifically greasy. With every menu you can order regular rice, fried rice or french fries. I would stay away from the fried rice in his case (which still isn't very greasy).
And the cantonese dishes are all lots of veggies with meat (beef, chicken of shrimp).

As for the location. It's behind the Renaissance in town. I would locate it between Que Pasa and Rumba.

I'm assuming a menu would be too much to ask for? Also looking for a menu for Nos Cunucu.

Paris Chinese Restaurant is on Wilhelminastraat - the same street as El Gaucho but on the other side of the road and closer towards LG Smith Blvd.

Menu can be downloaded at http://dinearuba.com/Documents/Paris.pdf

I don't have a menu for Nos Cunucu however they have many 'chalk board specials' that change each day. Get the fried polenta cubes with the melted gouda on top for an appetizer. Can't remember what it's' called in Papiamento but it is delicious!

Thank you SO much. I am starving now after reading the menu and Nos Cunucu sounds great. Do you know if they have any KID dishes? I was debating bringing a hot dog and asking them to microwave it

I honestly don't remember. My husband and I tend to try the really unique things on the menu so I wasn't out looking for kid-friendly. I can tell you this establishment is truly a family affair. The daughter is hostess and waitress (although I believe she may have left this month for University in Holland) and her brother, mother and father take turns cooking in the kitchen. I know they would be very amenable to coming up with something for a child if asked. Make sure your son or daughter gets to see 'Cookie' - their pet monkey who lives up in a tree in their side yard

You can see Cookie along with a photo of Nos Cunucu near the bottom of our album at http://homepage.mac.com/aruba4us/PhotoAlbum1.html

Those pictures are great and judging by the excitement just from looking at the pictures of the monkey, they should be just fine there.

I'll have to check out some more of these places next time I'm down there.
