lou--i tried...i even did a poll to get people to respond...i tried again...the lack of response showed me that the several hours a week i was taking to get the lessons together weren't worth it. so, i gave up. no reason to work hard if no one responds.

I've always found that trying to communicate with the residents works beautifully...even if you make mistakes. What most people (Americans, at least)don't understand (or don't want to understand) is that when you are in another country, you cannot expect the residents to speak English if it isn't their native language. But...if you show them that you are at least willing to try to speak THEIR language, they will go far more than halfway to help you!! And...you get smiles. And...you get MUCH better service. It has always added very much to our total vacation experience to at least attempt to speak Papiemento when in Aruba. Even a simple "conta bai" brings a smile and opens up even the most shy person. In a restaurant; in a perfume shop; or an ice cream parlor...try saying "bon dia"...and you'll be pleasantly surprised!!!!
