Default Parrotfish are Good Too

This is a very funny interesting story that an old friend of mine once told me.

A long time ago an American tourist was spending his holidays here. One afternoon walking along the beach he saw a group of men preparing a boat with "taray" (fishing net) and other fishing utensils. The tourist having his sense of adventure triggered he dared to go to talk to these men and ask them to let him join on there fishing adventure. Knowing Arubians they eagerly accepted and welcomed him on board. Picture that this is a small fisherman's boat with 4 men, the American can easily see the fishes by just looking over the edge of the boat.

After a while his companions decided that this is a good place to throw the net and they did. When they brought in the net the men started to remove unwanted debris and unwanted fishes like small ones and rare fishes then suddenly the tourist screamed "No, don't throw it back that's good too" The man stopped and asked "gutu?" showing him the fish, and the American responds "gutu". The men offered the American the fish and he invited them over for dinner and cooked the "gutu" for them all.

That's how the parrotfish got its Aruban name!

Hahaha GUTU

So, are you saying parrot fish are good eating?

I think that I would have a big problem consuming a parrot fish.
Something about the blue color.

:-)

Wink Re: Parrotfish are Good Too

Makes you wonder about the story that must go along with the Aruban name for grouper which (pardon my spelling) is jum-pow......

I'd have to think that whe it comes time to eat you'd be looking at a white (as opposed to blue) filet, just as with mahi mahi despite the flamboyant exterior color. I think I'd have a problem eating a Parrotfish too though, mostly just because of that goofball look they always have on their faces

and I thought I was the only one who thinks parrott fish have a goofy look.....that was until I fell in love and ate Grouper till I thought I would explode....then one day my husband brought one home from the marina and I flipped when I saw those UGLY baseball size eyes that bulge out from their head due to them diving below depth......pop goes their eyes when they have gone too deep.......makes eating grouper to this day a little weird !!!

Thank you all for your comments.

To seashelldiver, you would be surprised at where that name come from.

I have posted another story "The Frenchman's Pass", this is a special I'm dedicating to my grandpa who passed away last December.

I hope you all like it...
