The Past Tense

In papiamento there is the "preterito defini" (English Preterite) and the "preterito imperfecto".
The preterito defini is expressed by a and the preterito imperfecto by tawata.
These two tenses are used in cases where in English you would use the preterite and the progressive form

I was smoking a cigarette = Mi tawata huma un cigaria
Yesterday I ate bread = Ayera mi a come pan
When you came in I was eating bread = Ora bo a yega mi tawata come pan

The future tense is formed by means of the word Lo.
Lo is derived from the Portuguese word "logo"

The verbs ending in e or i take instead of the final e or i the ending iendo, e,g;
come - comiendo, skirbi - skirbiendo, bebe - bebiendo
