Cool 1st Visit To The Divi Aruba Phoenix

My Wife and I are staying at the Divi Aruba Phoenix from 9/1 - 9/8/07 as part of our RCI exchange. Any insight, suggestions and recommendations you can give us are appreciated. We have wanted to visit Aruba for years but have been on cruises the last 7 years for vacation.
Under the RCI point system, We are stayin' at the Phoenix for 8 days and with R/T airfare on American Airlines, all we had to pay was $198!!! Not to shabby huh!!?? We wanted to upgrade to 1st Class on the flight but it was an extra $2000 (ECONOMY IS JUST FINE)!! Hope to talk to an owner or past visitor soon.........

I don't know anything about RCI or their point system, but I know you got one heck of a deal!

We bought pre-construction and have been there since they first opened with the tower not yet complete. The staff is great and we have what is probably the least crowded beach area on Palm Beach. The French Market has very reasonable prices and their sandwiches are great.

The restaurant gets good reviews, but we've never been too excited about it. The food is only fair and the service is agonizingly slow. It's okay for breakfast, but we pretty much avoid it.

No CD or DVD players. They do have VCR's and rent movies in the French Market. The one bedroom has two televisions, but only one VCR. It's in the main living area.

Thanks Droy...Have to bring the radio I guess. Now I read there are only 8 (4 FM & 4AM) radio stations and 1 T.V. Station in Aruba...Is that true???

don't know about radio but at the phoenix there are at least 20 tv channels. there is one local channel and a few south american channels followed by the standard ones in the states and a few others. don't remember the specifics but there is enough to find something to watch unless you are really picky.

bring a discman or ipod and some portable mini speakers. we do it all the time.

There's a clock radio in the bedroom if you want music and don't want to bring your own. I have no clue how many radio stations there are, I never turn the radio on.

Sherry's right about the TV. I don't watch it myself, but my DH does & he doesn't seem to have any trouble finding something worth watching.

Have a great trip. It's still a couple of months before we'll be there........

Where do you own that you had that many Points to do the Phoenix (1 bedroom) for 7 nights at airfare for two for $198. That would cost a ton of Points (I think). Or did you put several years of Points toward the trip?

Wish I had read this sooner. My friends are going there Wed. 9/5 through 9/15.

Hope you're having fun.

DIVIARUBA....We just got back from the Phoenix. We own 2 timeshares, 1 in Pompano beach(Canada House that were trying to sell) and 1 at the Parkway Village (near the attractions in Kissimmee FL.). We burned about 52,000 points for the trip to Aruba Phoenix. We have been on cruises in the past 7 years so the points just built up. Check my "Trip Post" I'll do in the next 2 or 3 days to see what the "Phoenix" is all (or NOT all) about!!

Amazing. 52,000 points is nothing, I have to use 61,500 alone for the week I own in Aruba, so how you got the airfare and everything for 52,000 floors me! Looking forward to your report.

One Happy Island Re: 1st Visit To The Divi Aruba Phoenix

Don't get me wrong Droy, We had a good time. It was just unfortunate that after waiting 17 years to make it to Aruba, we stayed at a resort that was (in our eyes) completely under construction! Between the 3 new buildings going up, the updating of the bathrooms that caused the elevators to be monopolized by the workers and the reconstruction of the ceilings on the balconies ALL BEING DONE AT THE SAME TIME, it did make our stay at the Phoenix less than enjoyable. On a scale of 1 - 10, I would have to give the Phoenix a "3". RCI identifies this resort as a "Gold Crown" resort. My Wife and I have stayed at gold crown resorts......The Phoenix doesn't even come close!!! It was good that the whole time we stayed there, we were not even approached once by any salesperson trying to sell us a week there. They may have not liked our response.

It is pretty obnoxious. To have the bathrooms AND the balcony ceilings being done at the SAME time as the new construction to the 3 additional buildings just boggeled my mind! Who planned this, Moe, Larry & Curly?
If you would like to see some of the construction pics I took....Drop me a line at

Tim and Chrissy....what a fabulous job you did with your Aruba video....I so enjoyed it, thank you very much for linking us up to your U-Tube. I am going in another 5wks and your footage (and music) got me psyched! Is it just me, or is the Electric Slide the group dance of choice at almost every resort? I think its a great way to get people together. Thanks again for a great "visit" to that special paradise we all love.

Thank you all so much for the praises of the video. The unfortunate thing is that due to YouTube restrictions on upload time and file size, I had to edit about 2 1/2 minutes from the original footage.

Sorry to hear about your trip..I have been there twice this year and ,being an owner, knew about the construction. They were doing the bathrooms and such when I was there. I didn't have a problem with it because I spend very little time in my room except to sleep..I don't need a nap in the afternoon..lol..
As for being a Gold Crown resort, I wouldn't be quite that generous, but, I own at two other resorts, one in Vegas and one On Maui. It is comparable to both of them.. As for rating a trip to the Phoenix a 3 out of 10, It kind of makes me wonder what your looking for..

But to each his own.. I'll stay right at the Phoenix..No combat beach for me.No having to get up at 6:00 to sit in a chair for 2hours waiting to get a palapa..

I think all the Divi's in Aruba, except for the new ones, the Golf (different from the Village) and the new units at the Phoenix (a new resort in itself according to RCI) are Silver Crown.

I can't find where he said it was boring, but my husband feels the same way. He thinks all the time shares are boring. Sometimes I don't mind staying at home at night, but not very often on vacation. He HAS to go out every night and is always bored at the time shares which is why we hit the Divi or Tam every night because there are always people out, entertainment, we know the bartenders, and we just buy drink tickets. I agree, time shares (although we own 2 in Aruba and 1 in South Africa) are boring!

Ask any bartender at a time share in Aruba...after Happy Hour they are bored.

Thanks, I hadn't seen it, I was looking for the review on this bb.

Don't worry about the Phoenix. Have you stayed there before? The rooms in the Villas are more convenient to the beach and that is the way I would go, not the tower. But...I really am not a high rise hotel person. There's something about being drippng wet from the beach and having to take an elevator that turns me off. The Villas are also newer. If you are an Aruba Junky you will probably be happy anywhere.

although i wouldn't want the construction noise because i do go back to my room several times during the day, i love the high rise. i love towering over the sunrise, lol, and the sunset. nothing can interfere with the views.

but, the units really did need renovations badly. it doesn't make sense to do two or three things in them at the same time but they definitely needed it. when the get the elevators past slow death the units will be perfect for us.

i must say, if we could afford another week of timeshare, it would definitely be the aruba phoenix.

But...I really am not a high rise hotel person. There's something about being drippng wet from the beach and having to take an elevator that turns me off. The Villas are also newer. If you are an Aruba Junky you will probably be happy anywhere.
Hi
I am new to the Divi Phoenix. I have been to Aruba before but never stayed at a Divi property. Well, I will be going down to the phoenix in a few months so maybe the noise will be a little less. I am in unit 401 which I think has no view and is right where the construction is. I am not sure. I will hope for the best. I have read some pretty negitive stuff ...with regard to the building but they seem to have a great staff

It's all about your attitude. Focus on the negatives and be miserable or look at all the positives and have a ball.

We'll be back for two weeks in November and I guarantee, we won't let the noise, slow elevators, or anything else interfere with our good time.

Exclamation Re: 1st Visit To The Divi Aruba Phoenix

DROY, Your right!! It is all about your attitude. As I said before, We didn't have a bad time, I just feel that the Phoenix adding repair of the balcony ceilings AND the upgrading of the bathrooms at the SAME time they were building the 3 new additions to the Phoenix was poor planning.

LisaV, we stayed in 601, exactly 2 floors above where your staying and the view we had was of the building construction. The staff is excellent, there is no doubt about that.

Folks, All I did was give a trip report. I wanted to update those on the B.B. on the Phoenix property. We did not have a bad time in Aruba. We were just not satisfied with our stay at the Phoenix. Also, Like I said in my report, We work hard all year for vacation and this one we had waited 17 years for. I feel that RCI misrepresented the Phoenix. All the items I listed in my trip report aside, RCI reported the Phoenix on their site like it's a "Hopping" place. And I'm sorry, It's not!! It's not the type of resort we are used to when it comes to booking a Gold Crown (as RCI describes it to be). It may be fine for some, it wasn't for us. And I am glad for those that enjoy the Phoenix. We loved Aruba in a whole!

I do not, and have never, written trip or cruise reports coated with sugar when I didn't feel I enjoyed my stay there just because there are those that love the places I didn't did!! You have a right to your opinion. I was giving mine. We will visit Aruba again, we just won't stay at the Phoenix!!

We're not RCI members so I can't compare Gold Crown Resorts but, the name alone doesn't seem to fit the Phoenix. The Phoenix is clean, nice people, laid back, small (but growing), quiet, and, IMHO, has a good location.

It doesn't offer a lot of amenities and, even when it's full, it is not a "hopping" place. It's quiet and laid back. If you want a lot of action, the Phoenix is not the right place to go.

Is the layout. Because of the setup of the tower (which I think you are in), they should all have a view. It is on the construction side though.

I could also say about one of my trips, when we stayed at the Divi VILLAGE in March 2007, we had room 3114 on a trade, the main building, facing nothing but trees, but it would be looking toward the grocery stores. I liked the location, no one walked by except employees...which became the problem.

The first day we woke up at 5:30 to what we thought were the people upstairs slamming cabinets. Next day same thing, I went out and saw that a restaurant person was in the outside refrigerator by our room throwing the items he needed onto a golf cart type thing. I said something to my husband and he disagreed... I wanted to go to the front desk and let them know, but he said not to. So we dealt with it EVERY morning until one night about 11, he was up and I was alseep and he heard the slamming again. This time it was the door where the employees had to go to punch in for work and the door was broke and slammed. So every morning it was a combination of each. He went to the front desk and when he told an employee about the noise the manager on duty walked up and asked my husband what room number, the employee who was there said 3114, without my husband ever having given the room number, so it has obviosuly been an issue for a while. He said he would have the door fixed and would put up a note asking employees to keep it opened. Worked for 1 night then back to the way it was for our last night. So 6 out of 7 nights woke up at 5:30-6:00 because people were coming to work. I wake up early, but like to wake up when I want, not by slamming doors and throwing items! Now I think I will go back to bed since I'm still catching up from that vacation.......

Hi Tim

We just returned from our first time at the Divi Phoenix and was a bit disappointed with the resort and how rundown it seemed to us. I have posted my trip report.
