Default Observations.........

We arrived yesterday and, since we weren't here last year, were anxious to see all the changes. Here are a few observations.............

Check-in was agonizingly slow. Three people at the desk and just too many people arriving at the same time. They moved the lobby furniture around and had a table set up for Room Changes. No activity at the time we were there but it appeared to have plenty of documemts waiting for pick-up. I can't figure out what takes so long. Other than the credit card info, they know who's coming & what room they'll be in. What's the big deal?

Still only one elevator working in the tower so getting up to our room was slow.

The new pool & buildings look great. Had a drink @ Pure Beach and checked out the menu. Hubby is a very fussy eater & there wasn't much on the menu he'll eat so we'll probably pass. The bar was active & the bartenders quite friendly.

Got to the beach late today and was amazed at all the palapas they've added. People are literally on top of each other. Went over to the "new" side & there were available palapas there. Several were in the shade of the building closest to the beach but we needed to sit somewhere so we did. When we went into the water, we found out why no one was on that side.......... It's very shallow and there are lots of large rocks as you try to get to deeper water. If I had toddlers, it would be perfect but tomorrow we'll find a spot with the crowd at the "old" beach.

We're on the 7th floor & the sliders in our unit have been replaced. They look very nice & are much easier to open & close. The old ones weighed a ton & were very hard to move. Someone mentioned previously they wouldn't stand up to the usage & they may be correct, but they look good &, for now, work well.

And last................WiFi. I'm sitting in our room, on the 7th floor in the tower and have a nice strong signal. No problems getting on although it was pretty slow. Once I made my choice & paid, it's been working fine & the speed seems okay. The prices are outrageous but it's convenient and I need to stay in touch so I'll pay.
1 day $15.00
3 days $30.00
4 days $35.00
7 days $50.00
21 days $100.00

They don't have a 14 day package which is what I was looking for. I purchased just one day to see how it worked and now have to decide how often I need to check in at home.

I Love Aruba Re: Observations.........

Thanks for the updates!! I love hearing about what's going on.

As for wifi, I'm at ABC for a month, and pay $70. I buy my card at the setar kiosk at the aiport when I arrive.

Isn't it possible for you to go online, and buy directly from Setar? The charges you've outlined are ridiculous!

Enjoy your stay. Some of us will live vicariously through you!!

elaine, the phoenix is not a hot spot for setar which means you can not get setar wifi on their property. been there and tried it. as to the cost, it is much cheaper than their old system that was antiquated and worked slower than dial up. so basically they've come a long way from where they were a year or two ago. i love the place itself but their internet was one of the worst.

Thanks sherry.... I didn't know that! That sure wouldn't make me a happy camper.

What would the Phoenix have to do in order to accomodate their guests in making it a hotspot?

they would have to opt into setar's system. so far they have objected to it. i'm not sure why other than that they can get more money this way. for that matter, i never understood why their internet was the worst on the island in such a lovely timeshare. at least now it works, lol.

My husband reminded me that a few years ago I paid $4 - $5 an hour at the internet cafe @ Palm Beach so I guess if you look at it from the right viewpoint, $15 for 24 hours isn't too bad.

Weather is beautiful & we're heading to the beach.....................

This is another subject but I have a few questions. We will be arriving there on Saturday. Do we needto buy our own coffee for the room? Is it true we can buy liquor in Miami at the duty free shop and carry it on the plane to bring into Aruba? Counting down now only 5 more days

any food you want in the room you need to purchase yourself. i personally love to run to the grocery (lings is my favorite) and grab what i need or want including a bag of dutch coffee and half and half or milk. remember when you shop that the prices are in florins so calculate that in usd it is actually about 40% less. yes you can buy liquor in miami but remember that customs can, if they are in a bad mood, enforce the law of 2 bottles per person (i think that is the amount but someone can correct me if i am wrong.) they also have a convenience store on the property but the selection is small and the prices are higher as are those types of stores in the states.

can't wait to hear about your vacation!

As we headed to Hong King a short while ago, I reminded myself to mention here that even though there's only one elevator working here in the Tower, we haven't had any problems. (Except on Saturday when everyone was checking in, out, & changing rooms.) The Otis truck is in the lot & we assume they're working on the currently non working elevator. As we neared the first floor, we heard a strange sound that didn't excite us much but we arrived safely & attributed it to the elevator being repaired......................NOT

When we got back from our beer run, we were advised both elevators were out! We managed to climb up to our 7th floor unit and are very happy when we chnged to a larger unit, we couldn't get the two weeks we wanted on a higher floor! Hopefully they'll have things working by the time we head out for dinner. Cross your fingers...........

Thank you so much for your daily updates. I feel like I am there when I see you speak of the market, etc. It is always fun to shop at the markets. Elaine and I usually go to Ling's. I don't mind the prices of beer and liquor in Aruba. I wouldn't bother bringing in bottles of liquor from the U.S. even though I am on the border of tax free N.H. Elaine and I are fortunate to have SETAR at ABC. The $70 fee for the month is not bad when I see what others pay.
Looking forward to your next update.
Mary

The elevator that has been out of order is now working & the one that was working isn't. As long as one of them keep working, I'll be happy. I know the excercise is good, but I thought one of us was going to have a heart attack climbing those stairs today!

The weather continues to be beautiful and we're happy. All day on the beach then dinner & the casino(s). What's better than that?

dancemom, You'll find us bt the shower. Look for a Divi bag hanging & an orange cooler on the table.

We've had two elevators working for the past couple of days. If it keeps up, tomorrow will be much easier for everyone who's coming & going.

The elevator situation remains a mystery. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when or if there will be one or two working. Most often it's two but as I said previously, even with one we haven't had a problem.

Weather continues to be beautiful with no rain. I'm hoping it stays dry through the rest of the week.....................

I Love Aruba Re: Observations.........

Is the new spa working yet? By that I mean is it hot and bubbling? While we were there in October it was lukewarm with "barely there" bubbles. They told us it would be working "shortly" whatever that means.
