Default Skype Calls

Has anyone used Skype to call home while in Aruba? Does it work well? Cost per minute? Skype credit or subscription?

Thanks in advance!

Taylor... I use it all the time, and it's great! If your computer doesn't have a built in microphone, you need to buy a headphone.

You can "call" computer to computer free... and video talk as long as the person you're calling has downloaded skype. They need not put any money into their account to talk that way.

We're having a discussion about it here...

We used SKYPE last season to call both computer to computer and computer to telphone to Canada.
It only cost pennies for about 1/2 hour.

Started off with a $10 credit. Still have about $7.

Absolutely!! It works incredibly well!! And...it costs only a little over $.02 per minute to call the USA from Aruba. (To call Aruba from the USA via Skype, the cost is about $.16 per minute).

and the best part is that if you are doing the free computer to computer calls and have a webcam you can show off your tan and rub it in to the people at home, lol.

Skype works very well. I use it all the time. Skype In, Skype Out, PC to PC, PC to phone. I even send fax messages with Skype. Your internet connection is the most important thing for a good VIOP conversation. If your connection is poor, Skype will have problems to deliver a clear call. When your internet connection is poor, do not use your webcam. This saves lots of bandwidth.

Has anyone had any experience in setting up a phone number in Aruba that will forward calls to the US?

I'm in IT - so if it's 'teckie' I can handle it

I don't think you can use SKYPE to it. I think the plug in, Magic Jack that Radio Shack sells will allow it.

We need to know a lot more about Skyple.
Understand it can be free from computer to compuater in Aruba.
Two years ago, we had a friend who had a medical emergency in Aruba.
If all were enabled with Skype, it may have been less stressful for all concerned!
It was awful...dealing with a friend's situation. We were not family and they kept asking if we had family authority to deal with his care. One never expects the worst to happen, but it did with a good friend (not a relative). You want to do the best for a friend, but the law says you really have no authority. Just be careful out there!

JohnJT:- You can use and computer to access your SKYPE account if it has a microphone and speaker. Most do.

Just go on the web > call up Skype > put in your Name & password > you are logged on > dial the phone number and talk Computer to Telephone for just pennies.

If you send an E mail to the family, if they have Skype also, as to what time to turn on Skype and then you can hook up and talk for free.

John -

When traveling anywhere - US or abroad - always good to have
some form of letter authorizing medical treatment decisions if family is
not there with you.

US laws are really strict about medical access to info even if you
are family!

Better safe than sorry!

I have skype'd the past couple of trips using a credit card size router and an IPhone. I hook up the router to the cable/internet modem and let the IPhone find it as WiFi connection, fire up the Skype App and go.

Like EBB said, sending and e-mail to the person you want to call to coordinate the call is very helpfull. Another method we use is to 'ring' that persons phone as a signal to fire up skype, but last year AT&T charged (I think it was around $1) to do that, even though a connection was never completed(batrasterds) it must be a charge for accessing their network or their wise to that trick. Either way, it's small price to pay for being able to talk as long as you want in Skype and the clarity was alway exceptional, not anything like the early versions of voip.

I've never been charged for using skype, I wonder if has to do with having it as an IPhone app vs your PC?
