Default Aruba Grand-READY TO OPEN JULY 20TH-AGTSN

The "old" Aruba Grand---New RIU Aruba Palace Hotel---still has their time share units. Our private network includes over 360 time share weeks throughout the year. The new hotel is planning their opening for July 20, 2007. None of the time share units include the "All Inclusive" programs of the RIU, however, the RIU is offering discounted pricing for TS owners to take advantage of the All Inclusive program. Therre are a few options offered and can be enumerated upon request.
Our network has been most useful in keeping our fellow TS owners up to date on the progress of the new construction and answering many questions that have come up over the last 1 1/2 years.
If you are interested in renting or purchasing units at the AG/RIU, please contact me. You name and requests will be added to our Master Request List and sent out to our members.

Friends returned from Aruba on July 12th. They checked out the Riu-here is a short report.
Pool is huge-had no water in it. Nice pool bar. Still a lot of construction going on round the clock. You could not get up the drive-way to the main bldg. Lots of construction vehicles. No landscaping done and no windows in main bldg. They felt the original AG bldg will be open but be prepared for work being done while you are there.

As of yesterday, July 16th, the opening is still scheduled for Friday, July 20th. This can only be a 'soft' opening as the hotel will not be 100% completed. I cannot comment on staffing and the functioning of the hotel. We have members of our group who are now in Aruba and are sending updates daily (if not hourly)!

Red face Re: Aruba Grand-READY TO OPEN JULY 20TH-AGTSN

Hello Everyone! I am new to this bulletin board and "Blogging" all together and this forum was the first I was able to find on the RIU and its grand opening. We are honeymooning at the RIU August 26th - September 2nd. I know that the RIU is saying that they are having a "Soft" opening but can anyone clarify what that means? I really am looking for a relaxing time on my honeymoon and if it going to round the clock construction I think that we should opt for another hotel.
Does anyone have any other inforation or suggestions?

Sorry, but not a nice report. Thumbs down to the RIU. We stayed at
the Westin and went to the so called opening. What a joke! You were
allowed to visit the casino via four flights of stairs that still contained
tools, levels and ladders. We know a senior couple who are handicapped
who wanted to check it out for next year and were forced to use the
stairs. Without a room key you were not permitted past the casino. The
casino is dimly lit, card tables are against the walls with very little
clearance. The casino contained nothing spectacular in comparison to
other casinos in the high rise area.

Is the elevator to the casino just not done yet ?

Is it a nice place other than that problem ?

How is the pool ?

Are the rooms nice ?

Restaurants ?

We are paying for top notch facility, Should we complain when we get there if not up to standards ?

Thumbs down Re: Aruba Grand-READY TO OPEN JULY 20TH-AGTSN

They would not allow anyone into the main entrance, pool area, on
opening day. The pool area does not appear to have much shade
since all the palm trees are near dead or replanted. It appears to
have a two level pool surrounded by the three main buildings.

As far as the rooms, we were not allowed to see them upon our
visit opening day. Some of the rooms on the lower level closest
to the Westin have private hot tubs on there balconies, if you
call it private, from the Westin you can see EVERYTHING. Other
balconies had a couple plastic chairs.

The restaraunts practiced cooking all week for the 500 plus workers
working three shifts trying to get this place open. I didn't get upclose
and personal with any of them to see what they thought of the food.

The beach area palapas are in various stages of completion. The parking
area was not done, so people were parking on the sidewalks. The front
drive entrance is extremely steep. I will garantee that while you are
there you will hear the sounds of construction all day long. They claimed
to be 90% done at opening, giving them the benefit of the doubt, I'd
say more like 75%.

If you are paying "full price" and not being afforded the "guinea pig price"
then I'd probably be pissed. I suggest you take your travel agents phone
number with you just incase you get there and decide you want to bail
to another resort.

I hope you also realize the staff is new, literally untrained, the menu is
days old and untested by the public. If I won one of these deals for
free, I wouldn't have much to b*tch about, but if this is my vacation
and payed my hard earned money to go this deal considering the
situation, I would be very skepticle at best. I can't wait to read all
the horror stories when everyone returns after thier first week.

Hey, I'm sorry if you think I'm being harsh, I'm being as honest as I
can. I hope your trip goes well, good luck, if you have anymore questions
post before you leave or pm me.

Later,
millertime

What is the Westin like ? We condsidered the Westin. I am hoping to get some kind of upgrades and I am not particular in food. I would like to golf a day maybe they could get me a golf package for a day or something. Maybe a night out to another restaurant in Aruba?
Thanks for an honest evaluation ! I needed to know this going in.
I really want a good pool and bar near the pool. beautiful beach, and something nice at night to do.

Will you still be there on 24th and 25th?

What else is there to do nearby?

First time in Aruba , want it to be great.

Will check back soon to see if you can reply before we leave in the morning.

Thanks
kathy

The WESTIN is the old Wyndham. We have stayed there the last 6 years.
They have one of the largest freeform pools in Aruba. The Tambu bar is
poolside. The staff is curtious and friendly. Aruba is one place you DO NOT
want all inclusive. They have upcharges on everything. People who have
been to CANCUN, St. THOMAS, Purto Rico come to Aruba and expect the
same deal, it's not there. Take a colapsable cooler and visit one of the
local stores to pick up beer and supplies for the week.

The Westin's beach is a little windy at times, but is very nice.

The ARUBUS is the best way to get around for the most part, $2.30 rtpp.
Bus goes all the way downtown for shopping.

If you stay palm beach area, tons of Restaurants are within walking
distance.
Black Hog Saloon- BBQ bash
Blossoms Japanese located in the WESTIN
Lagunna Theme buffet located in the Raddison
Giligans located beachside at the Rad, simple menu
Smokey Joes best ribs in the carribean.
Tomato Charlies great pizza
Tango's great steaks
Hooters, well it's the only one outside the usa.
Wacky Wahoo's gourmet food local prices.
Our absolute fav place to eat is PELICAN's Nest located beachside
near Holiday Inn. I reccommend either grilled Mahi-Mahi or the breaded
shrimp.

The Midushi is an excellent co to do a day snorkel. 3 stops, open bar,
gourmet lunch, rope swing all ages. $60.00 per adult

I hope you have been reading up on all the old threads on this board,
because if you haven't you need to because there is a wealth of info
to be found.

no, sorry we won't be there the 24th, we just got back after a 10 day
trip. Good luck Kathy have a good time, relax you will be on island time.

From an email I received from the Riu- timeshares were not ready and people were put in rooms an given AI. This was for week 29-July20-27.

Just read on another BB a recent report-just returned-
The only Bldg. that was open was the one next to the Westin. Restaurants are in the main bldg. the one closest to the street.

i am new to this board, but i was directed here by a good friend who has been to aruba many times. i am looking for an AI honeymoon destination for december 2nd of this year in aruba. my TA has recommended the RIU, and has said that she has had one person come back already saying that it is amazing. i find that hard to believe with all the talk in here... but do you think if i book for the RIU for this december.. would it be a wise choice? i'm afraid it won't be finished and we will regret booking it and have a terrible time. :\ any advice or thoughts? i would stay somewhere else, but my budget is only around $3000, and we would like an AI. i appreciate any of your help with news about the RIU.

I really don't think you would have had a lousy time. From the pictures I have seen the rooms are very nice and the beach is great. No resort should "make or break" your vacation. JMO
Looking forward to our stay at the Riu in Oct.

Where will you be staying?

Looking forward to our stay at the Riu in Oct.

Where will you be staying?
well 1/2 of your stay is at the Resort, whether on the beach by the pool. Even if to go on an excursion for 1 day or 2 of the 7 days. Plus all of the reviews talking about no shade at the pool and the wind tunnel the hotel buildings create doesnt sound relaxing if i have to worry about flying umbrellas and sand.

We will be staying at the DIVI where tons of people have come back happy.

i think the only thing i'm scared about, when reading the reviews on trip advisor, is having two twin beds pushed together for a king. :\ we are having our honeymoon at the riu.. and that part is making me nervous. we aren't going until the beginning of december.. so i'm hoping it won't be that way when we get there...

when are you going in october? i'll be looking forward to hearing how it is by then!

krissy,
We will be at the Riu Oct.5th in our timeshare. I will try and ask people about the rooms and the beds and report back when we return. We have had friends that stayed in the hotel rooms when it was the Grand-after the rooms were renovated and they were very happy. Not sure what the new bldgs. are like.

Default Aruba Grand/RIU

Hello,

My membership is 2247 at the Aruba Grand/RIU my week is the 36th and I'm from Venezuela. I would like to know wich is the actual situation with the resort part, by this I mean who's in charge now, and who do I have to speak with to pay all the membership fees, and make reservations.

I would also like to know if the rooms were improved too.

Thankx.

Diana, from Venezuela

krissy-friends that just returned said in the new bldg.-the one by the road in a jr.suite-had 2 double beds pushed together. Not sure if this is the same in all the bldgs. I know it was not in the original bldg. You might want to call or send an email and ask.

You can contact Jelishka at ts.aru@riu.com
She is handling all the Palm Club Membership and should be able to answer your questions. Hope this helps.
The rooms were not renovated.

krissy-I would check the Riu web site and see if they give a number or email address. You have to be very specific with your questions.
this is the only number I have- 011-297-586-3900

Good luck.
