Default Aruba vs SXM

Never been to Aruba and am curious to hear from those who are familiar with St Martin how you compare and contrast these 2 heavily visited islands.

Thanks

Hi charlieh, I have never visited St. Martin but I have seen pictures and some videos and it looks wonderful, most pictures most seashores and vegetation do remind me of Aruba so I guess they are quite the same. St Martin has more hills though, Aruba you can say is more flat.

The main difference would be the identity, both islands has a different background and that means the people and their culture.

What we hear all the time about Aruba is the people are friendly and welcoming.

Aruba has it all over St. Martins and even St. Thomas. It is the people that make the island what it is. They welcome tourists with open arms.

Visited St. Martin years ago and almost bought a condo because we loved it so much and at the recommendation of a friend went to Aruba the following year to see what that was like and can only say we bought the condo in Aruba because we were and still are more comfortable there. To us it's the people of the island who are so wonderful. Both great places, great restaurants, great beaches, but the people of Aruba made it different for us and now we are still fortunate to visit Aruba several times a year and know we made the right decision.

Thanks for the replies. Reading through various threads, the friendliness of the island people has to be real and not imagined. Very good to hear.

I've heard about the non-stop strong winds. I guess all in all that is a plus from a mosquito standpoint (important) as well as keeping cooler at the beach. Don't know if this improves the no-see-ums or not.

Also got the impression that the location of the island makes it much less of a hurricane target. Living in NC, I've grown up with hurricanes and every fall it is something to be concerned about.

My wife and I have been to St Martin and St Barts at least a dozen times between the 2 islands. Have to admit we enjoy the French beach thing (and drinks). The Dutch side of St Martin is too overdeveloped in my opinion.

Crime has also become as issue for SXM that is frequently in the local news there.

I have to assume that driving on Aruba is on the right side of the road.

How many "long" beaches are there on Aruba - good walking beaches?

Nice strolls can be done on the white soft sands of Eagle and Palm beach, specially during sunsets which I do enjoy very much whenever I have time.

For hiking I suggest the wild side the coast is rockier and surfs are very rough, but the view is quite breathtaking, untouched and very windy specially during this season.

About hurricanes, yes we are quite just a little outside the hurricane belt but still we may experience hard winds rain that can last an entire day or night. But that happens only when the eye is passing close by.

Rain: we usually get more rain night time than daylight, and we call it "bendishon di awacero" translates to God's Rain Blessings but it means actually morning sprinkles or dew.

Crime: yes everywhere the crime seems to become an issue. I usually common sense as a friend, and here you can read some important tips on safety and precautions. http://bb.visitaruba.com/f57/safety-tips-10243/

Yes the Trade Winds blow almost all the time. The majority of the time they are comfortable, not what you would call strong. Spring time usually has higher winds. In many trips to Aruba we have never had any issues with bugs of any kind. Even last November with a great deal of rain we had no mosquito problem, though others reported bites.

Never been to St Martin but have visited numerous other islands in the Caribbean. In our opinion, Aruba is the best choice for US travellers. If you have the means to compare Caribbean destinations, you may find Aruba is a perfect fit for your Caribbean experience.

With the Trade Winds, I would assume that Dengue Fever is not a problem?

Opinions I have read on other message boards are that Anguila is too "Americanized". I've heard the same complaint/opinion of Grand Cayman.

However that would not impede me from visiting.

Am very familiar with both. As Local Lisa pointed out, there are some ethnic and cultural differences and others will point out the geography etc. My take on it is this:

It's about people and the way they make you feel. Until now, Aruba leads the Caribbean and other major areas in this one characteristic. RCI and II are able to give excellent popularity profiles based on exchange requests and the timeshare sales. Simply said

ARUBA IS # 1

I note that this is an Aruba BB so there are prejudices, however I stick by facts and my prejudices.

be well
