One Happy Island Aruba Bound!!

The day has finally come where I get to head off to my favorite Island for my 23rd trip. I guess you could call it my second home! I will be there for 6 weeks and I plan to take alot of people from the boards snorkling. I love to show people the underwater world and all the fish and coral. I tell people that God made it more beatiful under the water than on top! It seems like the more times you snorkle, the more chances you have of seeing different things. Thanks to all the board members that I have met over the years and I look forward to meeting others. I will try to post as often as I can because I sure enjoy reading other peoples post when I am at home working. Hope to check out some new places and meet some new people. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Thanks to everyone. It has been a looong day. My 7 am flight from Ft. Wayne to Chicago got cancelled, the 1 pm flight got cancelled and now the 7 pm flight was cancelled so I have been sitting in the airport all day and not gotten very far. They said 38 american eagle planes were damaged last night in Chicago and its a mess. They said come back tomorrow so I asked if any other airline could get me out. They said they had a few seats on the 8:30 pm to Chicago, then to Dallas Ft. Worth getting in after midnight and then leaving at 5 am going to Miami and then off to Aruba for a 1:35 pm landing. I really hope this works out. I guess there are alot of unhappy people but not much you can do about mother nature. Had to cancell my snorkle trip for noon tomorrow but hopefully everything will work out. So much for Aruba tonight. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

I finally made it here. I couldn't believe it but after getting cancelled on 3 of AA flights they booked me thru United just to get to Chicago and the lady at United counter said she had to get a supervisor since I was going out of the country. The lady told me since I was staying more than 30 days I needed a visa. I told her I just was here 3 months ago for 9 weeks and I never had to have a visa plus AA already checked me in to go and they never said anything but now United says they can't let me go. After 45 minutes she went to her boss because I didn't take no for a answer and her boss said its ok for him to go. I asked the customs guy here in Aruba and he said you can come 6 months a year just not all at one time. I got unpacked what I left here but neither of my 2 bags made it. I had a cooler of frozen meat in 1 suitcase but yesterday when I got cancelled, I went and took it out and some places put it in the freezer in between so I am glad I took it out or I would have had a big mess. The wind is really blowing here today. Kent

The airlines do not know what Aruba's requirements are. We got nailed a couple of years ago.

Now we carry paper work with official Aruba info and web sites.

Wow, another flying horror story. It seems that some airline personnel like to make up their own rules. Glad you finally made it safely and hope you don't have to wait too long for your luggage to show up. Have a great time.

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

My luggage got dropped of the next day at noon. Things are really good here. Its been more windy but I guess thats normal for summer. Took several groups and families snorkling the past few days. The water is pretty clear. I had a few guys ask for money at Mangel Halto. They say they are cleaning up the trash along there but that sounds fishey to me. I was leaving Mangel Halto today and a red jeep pulled up and dropped off some people. I asked her if she was Maudee and she said yes. I told her I read alot on the boards about her and people say they can't get in touch with her. She just smiled and said she is getting a new web page but she acted like she just wants people to contact her they get on the Island. She seemed very busy. Every Thurseday night they have a carnival deal at San Nicholas and they have all these tents set up for people to get stuff to eat. I tried the Barbeque from the smoke house and it was great!! Last night was at ZeeRovers! Everything was great. Went up to the Marriott yesterday afternoon and the beaches and pools were very thin. Maybe kids are still in school but I think July this Island will come alive. Its really nice meeting people from these boards. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Last night it was Old Man at the Sea. Its a very nice place to eat. You have plenty of space so they don't pile you in like Flying Fishbone. They weren't very full either but my filet was great along with pear salad and creme brule. Its pretty expensive and if you take a taxi from the high rise area, its pretty steep! I was at the Marriott this afternoon after a snorkle trip this morning. The adult pool there is really nice and now they added several more grills to the back building. They had a fishing tournament today and all the local boats were coming in and most of it was little stuff but I did see a nice Mahi-Mahi and a nice wahoo and baracuda. The people were buying the fish up as fast as it was coming in. The wind has been over 30 mph the last few days so its making up for a few weeks ago when they said the wind died for a week. I talked to the captain that runs Hats Off up town and if anyone wants to go deep sea fishing, hes a good guy and has a nice boat and will really try hard to get you fish. If you go, tell him Mr. Gerber sent you and maybe I will get a discount when I go. Ha! Ha! Tonight is dinner at Sultans. Thats a very nice local place close to the airport and I really like that place. Its very good and great prices. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Took a few more groups snorkling from the boards. That is so neat to meet all these people from all over the country. I had some from Norway and Brazil and Sweeden. I have a few that want to go night snorkling so we have been doing some of that. Today was the first day to spot a turtle. Sorry to Tico and Pam because I took them out first and never seen the turtle but the next trip with Rick Grosser, we finally seen one. I remember someone posting about Rick Grosser about bringing them some casino chips back and would even take any money. I just met him today and I wish everyone would be as nice and friendly as he and his family. They are GREAT people!! Thats another plus for doing the snorkle tours. The water has been very clear still but alittle choppy lately. I tried Tulips last night and was very surprised by the menue and the food. Very nice place to eat. Had a flat tire the other day but I was in a parking lot so in 10 min I was on my way. Hans from Tropical has been very good to me. His helper Dennis came to Club Arias that day and took the spare off and got me back in buisness. The weather has been great so far. I have seen some wet roads but hardly ever seen any rain so far this trip. Being here 6 weeks I brought some frozen meat along so looks like I will do some grilling for a few nights. If anyone wants to get on the snorkle list, please e-mail me direct and we will get something set up. Kent

Its just like I hit the replay button everyday. Took several more groups out snorkling from the boards and its really been nice. Grilled in a few nights and last night I did Pizza night at Club Arias. Gabrial is a great chef and every Wed night he does all the pizza and salad for $20. Tonight I ate local at Lagranja which is on the main drag in Savaneta. That was awsome. They have the best chicken and very good grouper and shrimp. They give u alot of food for $15 US. You could easy split a dinner because you get rice and potatoe and big portions. The weather is still great and the water is still clear.

You are such a good person to take so many out snorkeling with you and sharing in what you like to do. For me the best part would be meeting face to face the people on the Aruba boards. Thanks for your posts.

pgsoder, Thanks alot! I have some people coming tomorrow from Monroe Georgia. I wonder if you would know them. Last name is Howard.

Last night was Passions on the beach. Just like Amy says: That place is hard to beat!! I love the watermelon salad! There special was grouper and it was great! Tried King Ribs and thats just as good as it ever was. The Holleywood smoke house in San Nicholas was really good! The pulled pork and brisket was fantastic! San Nicholas 44. The owner said Hi to you and Mrs.44. The winds are really cranking today. Yesterday was the calmest day so far and today was the windiest day of all. The wind surfers are happy. The water really got stirred up today. I haven't seen hardley any rain so far. Its really been nice.

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Sorry for not posting in awhile but it been pretty crazy. Been doing 4 to 5 snorkle trips a day including a night snorkle. Sat night was Madam Janetts and everyone says thats the best on the Island. The almond crusted grouper is the best. Sunday we seen a big manaray when we were snorkling. I talked to a buddy at the dive shop and he is in the water 7 days a week and he has never seen a manaray. Im glad I got to see it. I did get a pic so I will work on getting it posted. Sunday night was at Sultans again. That place is very good. We get the mixed platter so you get steak, lamb, and chicken and they bring the sauces out and its great! Monday I did see the fireworks at the Hyatt. They were really good but they only lasted 10 minutes. At least they were shooting of 5 or 6 at a time. I tried 5 brothers burgers and it was very good. It was really pricey for what you got. When he told me the total. I thought it was in Aruba and he said no that was US. Yesterday we seen a spotted eagle ray so that was great. Last night I took some first timers back to Madem Janetts and they were thrilled with the setting and the food. I am off to pick up some more snorklers from the boards. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Its been awhile but the days just seem to all run together! I can't believe that my trip will be half over this week. The time just flies when you are having fun. Just been taking people snorkling, checking on my guest at the Marriott and doing a night snorkle just about every night. I am meeting tons of people from the boards and its been really great! Everyone has been on time and they are always where I ask them to be. Some years I spend alot of time waiting on people but this year has been really nice. In fact, I always show up early and last night I was 15 min early for the night snorkle and Jeremy and Peggy were there waiting on me. Thanks guys! I really didn't expect that. We seen a smaller eel the other day and it was swimming on the top of the water like a snake. Thats the first time I have seen that. The weather is great! Not much rain at all. This week was MademJanetts for the 3rd time, Gionies which was great!! Smokey Joes which is a bargin. I haven't been there for about 7 years! Sultans again for the 3rd time. Well its time to head out for my first snorkle so I hope everyone has a great week and I will try and keep you posted. Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

My trip is half over now and everything is great! I took 4 groups out yesterday plus a night snorkle. Most people really enjoy the night snorkling. You see lobster, shrimp, crabs, eels, barracuda, squid and you never know what else you may see. Its a whole different world out there at night. Today I am renting a 4 door jeep and giving a Island tour so that will break things up a bit. Went to Passions again and Pizza night with Gabriel here at Club Arias and then we just grilled out a few nights. I am really getting to meet alot of people from the boards and it has really been great. I finally get to put faces with names. We haven't had very much rain but the mosquitoes have been terrible. Make sure you bring the bug spray. Looking forward to meeting alot more of you guys in the next 3 weeks. Kent Gerber

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

We rented the jeep from Top Drive and when we went to pick the jeep up, they said sorry but we have no jeeps. I asked why they never called my cell phone and they said 3 people never brought their jeeps back and they tried calling them with no luck. The guy called all the rest of the stores with no luck. I asked him to call the manager and I told him that I was not very happy because I had 4 of my guest all ready to see the Island in the 4 door jeep. He said I can give you a geo jeep until a 4 door comes back then I will come and switch it out for you. You know how that goes on Aruba. He said he would knock $25 off so we were at $100 for the day. We was just up by the lighthouse and he called and said he could meet us and switch. We had everything packed so we told them we would just keep what we had. When we went to the Natural pool (which is a no no but please don't tell anyone) We only made it 90 percent of the way and then we were going to start getting damage on the underside because a geo is lower to the ground then the 4 door jeeps. It was 4 wheel drive but much lower. We said fine, we would walk the last part and maybe hitch a ride coming back. That worked out well because its all down hill getting there and all up hill getting back. The people I took was first timers and they loved the pool. We were lucky because when we were ready to start back up the hill, 2 jeeps came and it was a family of 5 so they rented 2 jeeps to get everyone in so they had plenty of room to take us back up to our Geo. When I returned the jeep the guy said he would do $80 for the day since we kept the Geo. I have had really good luck renting from Top Drive if you want to explore the Island for a day by yourself. We ate at Charleys for lunch and if you ever get their special, which is a pork tenderlion, that is very tender and good. They have a really hot sauce I like to mix with catsup and put on the steak fries and the tenderlion. Other than that its like a broken record. Eat, sleep, snorkle 3 or 4 times a day and also do a night snorkle most nights. I am still meeting alot of people on the boards so I have really enjoyed that. I have only seen 5 turtles in 5 weeks which is not very many. I think in the winter I see alot more. Almost everynight I see eels but not many during the day. I had a list of new places I wanted to try but so far I only made it to a few. I ate at pizza bobs the other night and my wife and I LOVE there pizza but its funny because I hear people saying they always get the order wrong. I go about 8 pm and they all have there eyes glued to the soccer game on the tv. I didn't want to stay forever because I had a night snorkle so I orderd my drink and said I would like a meat lover pizza. She brought me my water and I sat for 40 minutes. She then caome to me and said would you like anything else? I said I was waiting on my pizza I ordred 40 minutes ago and she said I'm sorry but I didn't know you ordered a pizza. She said it will only take a few minutes but I told her that I was going to be late and I couldn't wait any longer so i left. That was a very dissapointing night! Not that I was going to starve or anything! Ha! Ha! Well, I got several groups today so I have to get running. Its like a full time job over here! When I get home from 6 weeks of this, I'm going to tell my wife, I NEED A VACATION!!!!! Or maybe I shouldn't tell her that! Have a great day! Kent

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

Today I was suppose to fly back home but I met a very nice AA agent down here and I was able to xtend my trip till Sat. I guess I have 3 more days in Paradice!! Not much is going on. Its just the same thing everyday. Eat, sleep and snorkle. I was snorkling the other night and we seen a big loggerhead turtle which was bigger than me. Thats the first time I have ever seen one of those big boys! It was sitting on the bottom so we watched it for a good while and then it just start swimming away very peacefully. Seen several big green eels this trip. The weather has been great but this morning, there is no wind. Talk to you later. Kent

Island.... it's great to "see" you!!

I hope "entertaining's" a good thing! lol

Lucky you... three time's a charm!

I missed Ommi in February. He was busy redoing the restaurant which I didn't get to see, but I'll make up for it next February. I won't even have to run up and down the steps to partake of my very bad habit of smoking.

Not only is the food wonderful, the host is most gracious, and a super guy!

Kent,

You are indeed the grand ambassador of the snorkeling world!
I am sad that I've lost the ability to snorkle (age and bad knees).
Also sad that I'm not in Aruba when you are.

We just came back from Hawaii...paradise of another sort. The trip was to celebrate my niece's wedding and it was also a family reunion. In Florida, we only get to see family and friends from the Northeast about once a year.

One of the activities was an afternoon pontoon boat trip to a 3-acre sandbar in Kaneohe Bay. The water was knee-deep and big turtles went swimming by...as well as some unidentified fish 2 to 3 feet in length. The people on 4 pontoon boats (about 40 people) were thrilled by the sightings.

In my good days, we saw turtles off the beach near Malmok. What a surprise to see them swim by!

Looking forward to our days in Aruba starting 9/10. I plan to buy a lottery ticket as it seems lucky to me to travel on 9/10/11. Enjoy your extra days in the Aruban paradise.

elaine, the new setup is very cool. the traffic outside the windows is interesting. it's a real sweeping view. they did a great job. he spent a lot of time with us again and showed off the cool new areas and dumbwaiter. he so deserves to prosper there. they work hard and do a great job. i expected very nice, but what we received was spectacular. really. every dish was a work of art. we actually took pictures of the food. there were eight of us and we all had something different. i should do a little wall collage for my new kitchen, using the plated pictures of the chow. ok enough, i'm weird about food. i just love to create in the kitchen.

johnjt, we too saw many turtles in hawaii. we were in maui when there were whales and turtles all over. it was quite impressive to see the whales for the first time. had a lot of trouble snorkeling there though, very rough and wavy along with the rip tides. wore me out.

One Happy Island Re: Aruba Bound!!

The party is over!! I made it home late Sat night and the fvirst class seats coming home were great!!!
I really enjoyed this trip to Aruba! I got the priviledge of meeting sooo many people from these boards and that was the highlight of this trip. Another highlight was getting some lobsters, fish , squid, and stone crabs when we would night snorkle and we had sooo many cook outs, it was great!
Also staying at Club Arias was awsome!!!! The staff and the small 10 room bed and Breakfast was the best! You never had to get up early for a chair at the pool. You could have your pick anytime you wanted! If you ever want to come a few days early to extend your stay with your timeshare or if you want to come a few days early to get a better price on your air ticket, this is the place to stay. Go to Clubarias.com to check it out.
At the end of my trip I ate at Barefoot Bar and grill and that is a sweet place. We had the creamcheese and mando sauce grouper and it was the BEST!!! I also went to Jads down at Baby Beach for lunch and that was great!! Fish sandwich and a chocolate smoothe. It doesn't get ant better than that!! Also went to the Old Fishermans place down town for the first time and the shrimp were Awesome!!
I can't wait for my 24th trip in Jan so I might have to sneek back down in Sept.
I hope people didn't get bored with my post because most days it was eat, sleep and snorkle!!!!!! Have a great rest of the summer!!!

Kent, I loved reading your reports. I also love it that you are no sooner home and unpacking and you are already starting to think about when you will be able to get back there to paradise. Such a great place, such great people and such fun had by all. Maybe when Elaine and Mary and I are all there in Feb. you might be able to stop by and say hello even though we don't snorkel!!! We're three fun ole gals!!!!! Right girls???
