Default the great car rental poll and ratings thread

yes, i have imposed upon poor localisa to spend a part of her day researching the names of all car rental agencies. she came up with a nice long list that is supposedly in business as of this moment. that isn't to say that next week there won't be more or less of them but this should be about as complete as it can be on 5 september 2008, lol.

each will have a yes or no vote. then of course we hope you will add to the information by explaining your vote if you can. tell us what you liked or didn't like.

i would appreciate if you didn't pass judgment on any company you haven't used since before 2007. a lot can change in a year or two such as new management or ownership. other than that, all bets are off, lol.

so, let the games begin.

Been using Econo for the last few years and have been very satified. I pickup/drop off at the airport or this year since it was after 9 pm when I arrived (I don't like driving in the dark), I took a taxi to The Aruban and picked the car at their other office at La Quinta the next morning. Since I was there for 3 weeks, the car did get very dirty. After shopping at Ling & Sons, I would stop at their office by Quality Apts. (not far from Texasco roundabout) and get the car cleaned at no charge.

I have been using Optima for the last several years and have been very happy with their cars and service. They answer my emails promptly, their prices are fair in my opinion, and their cars are in very good condition. Up until this year, I was able to pick up the car at the airport. This year a representative met me at the airport and drove me to their off-airport location, which is no more than 5 minutes away and on the way to town. My rental car was waiting for me, and I was in and out of their office in less than 10 minutes.

I Love Aruba Re: the great car rental poll and ratings thread

I used Ace and Royal. I thin I would choose Royal again- off airpor but not hard to find they do pick you up.I loved the free cell phone even though I did not use it too much. Also had 2 friends use Royal and both were very pleased.

It's easy to see from the poll results so far that Tropic ranks very high on the 'preferred' list! And the reasons why:
Hans and Denis are professional business people who obviously care for their business and are well aware of the competition.
They are accommodating
The cars are well cared for and clean
They always have a welcome (Bon Bini) smile!
Their rates are competitive
If there is a problem (dead battery; flat tire) they are "Johnny on the spot" with repair or replacment.

We have used their services for quite a few years now and have recently reserved a car for our next visit at the end of October. We highly recommend Tropic!

I used Tropic this year after jumping around looking for the best deals over the last 10 years. They were absolutly the best. Hans met me at the airport parking lot with my car, did the paperwork right there and we were gone in 10 mins.. They are very accomodating ( as Hans and I walked around the car, he pointed out the little dings and said all cars in Auba have them.He dosn't worry about them. Made me chuckle). They were there at the departure drop off and picked up the car. Great Great Great.
I'll be emailing them soon for my April/May rental.
Don't go anywhere else!

I have used Tropic, Econo and Optima. Would not use Optima again (no smoking allowed in cars)

Tropic has been reliable and the most economical. I love that they meet me at the airport espcially when departing.

Econo folks are very friendly and I love that they have an office at LaQuinta. I also loved renting the convertible one year..

But I will stick with Hans!!

I added a couple responses to the survey.
Used Optima this year and their service was great. It appears they will be called Payless soon (if not now).
Have also liked Econo price and service, but I would say their fleet is mixed...we've had great new cars and ones bordering on "clunker".
I note that TRAC (Toyota Rentacar) offers a choice between the "new style" Yaris and the "older style"...with a difference in price.
A few choices in the list have only been used once. I didn't think it was quite fair to say yes or no, so I skipped them. For example, I'd give Tropic an 85% rating, but they goofed on the pickup at the airport, so we moved on. I have been willing to change based on good reports on the various bulletin boards, discounts like the VisitAruba card etc.

I can't imagine every renting from anyone but Hans at Tropic Car Rental. I have been renting from Hans for fifteen years. He is punctual, courteous and a good businessman. His rates are fair, and his cars are good. The one time I had to call him during my stay to say I had an issue with the car (muffler) he arrived within an hour with another car. He meets me either at the airport or at ABC and again meets me at the end of my vacation wherever I choose to return the car. I have recommended him to at least thirty people who thank me profusely and always return to Hans. He's the best.

We have used most of the companies and we seem to like Royal very
much. They are easy to deal with and will help with anything.
We were stranded in Aruba due to weather and even though we
had returned our car to them, I was able to get it back from them,
at no additional charge, when our flight was canceled.

The worst has to be SUPER which gave us a car that smelled mildue and kept stalling. We had to push it in the center of Oranjastat and all
they gave us a credit for was $15.00, never again.
I din't go on vacation to push their car not once but 3 times.

The second worst is AMERICAN. The woman that we spoke to when
we rented the car brought it very late at our resort and told us that
we can return it late. When they picked up the car, we were charged
for an extra day due that they said the woman we spoke to went on
vacation, Not very professional.

What a deal that was.

Love this thread but would really like to see 4 wheel drive availability noted. We would love to try Hans @ Tropic but they don't have Jeeps or the like. Hate to make work for LocalLisa but that would be really really helpful for us--the only reason we rent a vehicle is to travel to the "other side" as we could use taxis or the bus otherwise.
Thanks!
Lesa

I would not reserve with Royal again. I reserved a compact car for 18 days. As I am crippled and use a walker, I need a car easy to get in and out of.
Upon my arrival at the airport I was shuttled to Royals' office across from the airport. There I was with my luggage and using my walker when they showed me a not so new big pickup truck and told me that was all they had. I said I could not possible even get into a truck like that and 3 more times they said that was all they had. The problem with these off site places is that there you are tired from traveling, with your luggage and no other rental place to go to.
Finally, they said they would contact a local rental and they found me a 2002 Toyota. It was nice of them to get me another company but they knew my flight number and when it was going to arrive and they did not have the car I reserved or any car for that matter.

I have spoken about Hans (Tropic Car Rental) many times, but I have to mention it again. I have been renting from Hans for countless years, as have many of my friends. He is the best!!!!! I have had my car now for three weeks. Yesterday Hans emailed me and said he had passed me on the highway, and the car looked dusty. He said, "I will gladly come and take it to the car wash." This morning I went out to the car and it was sitting there shining!!!! Only Hans would do something like that. Not only does he reasonably price his rentals, he is punctual and professional. I recommend him highly.

(He rates "FIVE SMILIES"!!!)

Default Re: the great car rental poll and ratings thread

just returned from the island two days ago. we were steered to ALL DRIVE car rental by the conscierge, linda, at the rennaissance, we were told we would be getting a chrysler town and country or dodge caravan. when the pick-up person arrived, she was driving a car so small, we barely got our luggage in. we told them we had seven people we were renting for. ** what if they were all there at the pick-up time? they would have all had to sit in the hotel lobby for two hours, while we were driven to a very remote area which i would have been worried about if i hadn't been referred by the conscierge. fortunately there were only two of us at that time. we had the others to pick up a little later.

we were driven about 40 minutes to their "office", where there were about a hundred junky looking cars about. after filling out the paperwork, and feeling like a hostage at this point, we were given the keys to a hyundai H-1. this is like a "dream team van" that can hold up to 12 people. it is a diesel as a lot of the vehicles are there, but not what we ordered. they said they didn't jnow anything about a caravan, and didn't have any.

we got the luggage in this van, and got out of there. they did leave almost a full tank of gas, and said to be sure it was full when it came back, and by the way - leave a ten dollar bill in the ash tray when you leave it in the airport parking lot, as they have no spot there for return, or pick up for that matter. we were given bad directions we could barely understand, and no map out of the area we were in. fortunately, after being lost for a little while, we produced our own map from the depths of our luggage.

this is the oldest vehicle we have ever rented, had a a billion miles on it, rode like rocks, and had no power , speed at all. the first time we needed the headlights, three days in, they did not work properly, one was out the other flickering. the air was marginal, and it was hard to shift into drive or reverse. we thought the auto shifter was going to come off. we tried to get hold of linda at the rennaissance, several times, but to no avail. the rental company had a busy signal for two days. so we kept it.

we were forced to drive with the windows partially open, as the exhaust got louder by the day, and was beginning to smell.

this was no bargain, it was almost $500.00, for 7 days, with no frills or extra insurance.

our original reservation was with thrifty, who were going to give us a kia carens, which is advertised on the site as a 7 passenger, but is not for 7 adults, and certainly no luggage. it is a compact van at best. we found out before going with all drive, after talking to linda at the renn. she was going to help make arrangements in getting the thrifty car to the hotel, instead of our arrangement at the airport. it was she who did alert us that the karens was not what we needed. but she blew it with all drive.

Just happened to notice: Only three car rental companies rate 'double-digits'. Tropic, Royal and Econo Car. We chuckle a bit when we read of all the problems folks have had with most, if not all of the other companies. When you find a good 'thing'....stick with it!!

ok, so a lot of you are hans fans. question; is it just hans, or the company in general? sounds like he must run the comp if he can run around spritzin up your ride. i have always prided myself on persoanl service, and it sounds like he does too. sounds like a local company. does he have a selection, or just a few to pick from? if you call tropic will you normally be able to deal with this man, or is this service simply the way this comp does business? wouldn't that be nice?

been burned recently by all drive, and was not estatic the year before with thrifty either, whom we have used with good results in other places. thrifty got effort points for trying to get more out of me. they were persistent, but we prevailed...........of course they didn't have what we were reserved, but oh well. i'm just a little gun shy after using a local co, all drive. they were even recommended by the consciege at the renn., linda. i wonder how much they pay her to say these truly absolutely beat old wrecks are good vehicles. and whoever said - you are tired by the time they take you off site, you are right for sure. you feel like a hostage.

The only difference in Tropic's cars is the color. They are all Toyota Yaris.

Han's (owner) and Dennis are the only employees and both very nice. If there is a problem with the car, they will be there to help. If car is rented for more than 2 weeks, he picks it up and cleans it at the mid point of you trip.

I trusted Han's enough to buy one of his cars sight unseen. That was over 3 years ago and am very happy with it.

Island Dog!! When you deal with Tropic, you deal with Hans. He's 'the man'. His business is car rental, but SERVICE is what you get with the rental. Not only that...he's a fine gentleman (so is Dennis, although most of our dealings have been with Hans). The Yaris is dependable and although it's just my wife and I in the car most times, there are times when we'll meet another couple and go out for dinner, etc., with them. Car is comfortable for four adults. You'll be very happy dealing with Hans and Dennis at Tropic!!

Not a fan of Hans, though I see him at the airport all the time !
We don't like Yaris cars and it's spooky to have someone who doesn;t really have an office, is renting his own personal fleet of cars, and as such, feels so involved that he'll take your car away for a "surprise" wash. We stick with the major U.S.-based brands, so we have recourse if need be, and we get great internet rates and frequent flyer miles. We love Budget, Alamo, National, Avis, etc. -- whoever has the lowest rates.

That's what makes 'horse racing'. The same opinions that are expressed about restaurants, shows at the legitimate theater, movies, etc. We're all entitled to say whatever we wish about whatever we want to. Tropic and Hans will nevertheless remain as our favorites in this category.

Used Hans again this trip......he now has an added wheel lock on his cars and we carried that extra little thing with us so if someone broke into the trunk they could not unlock the wheels.
Hubby accidentally left the lights on....got confused with the windshield wiper...battery went dead and Hans was there within half hour with a new battery.

which car rental companies are located directly at the airport, I think there is about 10. which of these is the better one to rent from. i don't want the hassle of renting from outside the airport.

Well.. I vote for Clemie’s.
We did go there for 3 times now and we are very satisfied about the service. The car.. do not expect to much of this. It drives. But it gives me a real Aruban feeling. 3 different color doors, a broken mirror, lots of smoke and dull paint.
But it drives and I don’t have to feel sorry if I put my diving gear in the trunk. They are not that difficult and they do not charge to much.

If you rent for 7 day’s you pay for 6.

We used Ruba Car Rental last January and were satisfied. Although the car was a 2002, it ran well and the people were nice to deal with.

just an fyi for marriott owners. and, i guess anyone else who thinks that having a hertz #1 gold membership attached to your ownership as a courtesy is a bonus. our "person" at marriott gave us a "special" vacation club hotline number for their travel partner - hertz, so we called, figured they would be the best rate, as it was said that there would be discount for vacation club members. the rates for anything that hertz offered were a little more than twice that of the dozen or so we had already checked on. it's pretty much the same in the states too, but we thought we would check anyway.

Another vote for Hans & Tropic Car Rental. We used him for the first time this trip (Sept 09) & could not be happeir with his service. Our plane was a bit late arriving but Hans was there waiting. The car was not new (2005 Yaris) but was clean & well maintained. Drop off, also not a problem. The whole rental process was handled online a month before we arrived. Good car, good service & best price,Tropic will get all my future rental business.
On two previous trips we relied on the buses, what a hassle!

Just returned and we used Tropic again. As usual a very smooth process and they are very prompt delivering and picking the car up. We drove around and did some shore snorkeling....I pack large garbage bags and put them under our towels so the seats don't get wet.

we are arriving on march 11th, for 11 nights. probably won't need a car for the first few days, but not sure who to go to at this point.

i've heard nothing but good things about the service hans provides at tropic, however, he is booked during that period. need a small to midsize car, and we thought in addition we'd rent a jeep for one day to go to the other side for a spine alignment ride. any other recent positive experiences, and maybe decent prices?

I had a very bad experience with U-Save (ACE), last year.

I would avoid them........

They had no car for me, but repeatedly stalled me, until basically I ended up having no car the first two days of my trip, despite a reservation.

One Happy Island Re: the great car rental poll and ratings thread

thanks for the optima tip. i have been communication with a guy named hector for the past day now. he has been very responsive, and dead on with what i need, availability, good pricing, and convenient pickup and drop off. i don't know if he is one of the owners, or someone who does their computer responses, but he is very good, polite, and a great public relations person for their company. he is way easy to talk to, and doesn't make you wait long for information. so far so good. if the jeep works out as well as our dealing, then i'll post here to let you all know.

by the way, their advertised rate for time-share owners, for a jeep wrangler - 7 days, was $420.00. the actual end price he quoted me was under $400, including all the taxes and fees. not bad at all i'd say.

We use Royal every time we go and never have a problem. They are located off the airport because they do not want to subject their customers to the new airport taxes that are over 11% for rental companies that are based on the airport property. They have a representative that meets you right at the airport exit doors. They shuttle you to their location that is two minutes away and the paperwork and your vehicle are ready when you arrive at their location. Quick easy and efficient. They even transfer the luggage for you from their shuttle to your rental car. They also have a second location near the cruise ship terminals in town. Only once did they not have the car we requested. In this case they upgraded us to a larger vehicle at no addl charge.

As for renting from the "American" brands you are sadly mistaken if you think you are protected by the US based corporation. These are all franchises that have paid for their right to use the name (i.e.: Avis, Hertz, etc.). We had a problem with our rental in Aruba years ago with Avis. We felt like we were held hostage and railroaded into paying a $500 deductible for some water that got inside the vehicle. We finally decided to pay it so that they would let us leave and deal with Avis when we got home to the US. Got home and contacted Avis here and they told us that there was nothing they could do because it was a franchise that was out of the US and they could operate any way they wanted. Don't believe that just because it has the name of some BIG US corporation that you are in the best possible situation.

ArubaMichele,
You are correct. We have used them for years and they are
wonderful to deal with. They are always waiting at the Airport
even if the flight is early or late. Their prices are also workable.
We had a bad problem with Super, where we had to push the
car a few times. What a junk and smelled of mildew.
We also had a problem with American where they charged us
for an extra day because the girl we delt with went on vacation
and did not speak to whoever. That year we moved from
the Ocean Suites to the Hotel at the Ren and they took a
fit when they reached us. They were overbooked at the
Ocean Suites and offered us a free week if we gave up
one overnight. That was a good trade but not for American
car rental. They also gave us a junk anyway.
Most of them are O.K. until you have a problem and there
is no connection between them and the companies in the
U.S.
Rae

We have used Royal for the past several years and have been very happy with them. I do miss them being right at the airport, but they have always met us at the airport even when we've come in late. They usually get through the paperwork in record time. And they are one of the few places that rent a van when we have a few more people with us. Although I hate the fact I need to use the free cell phone a few times a week, I'm awful glad to have one handy.

Royal gives you a free cell phone? We do not use a cell phone in Aruba but the last visit, I was thinking...what if something happened when we were out and about and no phone.
How are their rates and service compared to Hans?

nancy, nothing compares to hans and his service but royal seems to get good ratings. the phone would be the only temptation to go somewhere else and even then, i would probably have a hard time leaving hans. it's a tough choice to make.

I know...Hans has been so good to us. Guess I'd really feel as though I betrayed him...I should look into what Verizon has for packages when we are on vacation.

how many times a year do you go to aruba? if it is more than once, you might want to go into setar and purchase their cheapest phone. if you total the cost of calls to make reservations you pay it back pretty quickly.

also, if you are only going to use the phone for an emergency, depending on what phone you have, you need a sim card that you can get at the airport in aruba. check with verizon. i don't think it costs much at all until you use it. then it becomes expensive per minute. if that is the case and it's for emergencies only, then it won't hurt your wallet.

please let us know what you find out.

Has everyone forgotten about SKYPE??? If I remember correctly, it costs about $.021 per minute from Aruba to the USA or vice versa. Of course, both the calling party and the number called must have Skype. But....how can you beat that? I've tried it for the past few years to call home, speak to the grandkids, etc. ...it's like Mom's apple pie!!
