Default How is the re-done Sunset Beach Bistro?

I don't want to call it "Pure Ocean" because it's a far more meaningless name than the original. I hope they left it with some of its original character and didn't load it up with TVs, mediocre entertainment, and too much lighting> It's a thatched roofed beach restaurant. While it seems that Divi doesn't like that type of ambience, some people do like a beach place to remind them of the beach. It was scheduled to reopen the day after we left in January,so I'm curious about how it turned out.

Hi Pirate King,
Pure Ocean was late in opening and didn't open until late week 4. We had planned to eat there on our last night (Friday is romance night with entertainment), but it was quite windy and we wanted to eat on the beach when we try it so didn't go this trip. The menu looked very good with something for everyone and you can't beat the ambience and setting. Sadly, the first reviews on TA aren't looking too good, so hopefully after the opening hiccups things will improve. We plan to try Pure Ocean on our first night back next year.

Thumbs down Re: How is the re-done Sunset Beach Bistro?

The renovations to the restaurant came out well but the food leaves much to be desired. We ate there with another couple and all found the food to be oversalted and dry. We heard similar complaints from others who had dined there. The beach tables were repainted as part of the renovation project and the paint peels off the tables and sticks to your arms and clothing. We complained to the waitress and she said everyone's been complaining about it and suggested we talk to the Phoenix general manager which I did. He acknowledged the problem and said "We've got to do something about that." Nothing was done over the following week. We used to eat at the Sunset several time during our stay and this year we discouraged others from going there after our experience ... very disappointing. The new Pure Ocean has the potential to be a great restaurant but management needs to step up. As owners we deserve better!

Thanks. We will be there in January and see if it gets any better.

We were disappointed with our meal there when we ate at Pure Ocean in September and also the "whatever" attitude of the Manager when he came around and we voiced our disappointment. We will likely give it another try this month when we are back Jan 18-Feb 1 hoping improvements have been made. Have a great trip Pirate King.

Thanks. It doesn't sound encouraging, but we'll see. Too bad: Sunset Bistro was one of our favorite places.

Update:

We went there this past Monday (Jan. 20) and were actually quite pleased. Glad to see that some of the waiters are still there, and, while the three course dinner idea is gone, the menu is more extensive and we enjoyed it enough to go back on Friday when they had live music in the form of a sort of Aruba Kenny G: mellow tunes on saxophone. The seafood entrees are quite good, and the beach seating is still one of the best options in the high rise beach section, even though we liked it better when it was a little more rustic and "islandy" in ambience. It's still quite underutilized, for whatever reason, so I hope people get attuned to it.

Hi Pirate King,
We also went back for the Saturday BBQ on the 25th and really enjoyed it. Great service, beautiful atmosphere and very good food at a reasonable cost. Much improved from last year.
Same with Pure Beach, we ate there several times and always had good service and very good food. The Manager stopped by all the tables on several occasions when we were there to make sure everyone was happy.
There's still one bartender that really needs to be let go at PB though.......a customer complained to him about something one day and he said "The island's too crowded anyway, why don't you go home". WOW!! Sure hope that guy let the Manager know.
We were really happy with both restaurants this year; just returned last night and look forward to our next stay.

That's interesting, about the bartender! We never go to Pure Beach, though. We'd rather walk to Pelican Nest if we don't go to Pure Ocean (still a silly name).
