I'm not quite sure what you mean, but going by the title of this thread, my favorite's Lings. Everything's fresh, and I love the bakery. Super Food has great licorice candy from Holland so that's always a stop, too. I usually find a few other goodies while browsing.

Smile Re: Your Favorite Grocery Store?

I dont believe there is a noticable difference in selection or price. All have what I need most of the time. The most organized is Ling and the least organized is Super.

I agree Ling's has a great selection and for freshness, can't be beat. But more often than not, we end up at the Certified. Their prices usually can't be beat and we're pretty pleased with the selection. Certainly between these 2 stores, we more than covered.

my problem with certified is that it is dingy and no one seems to want to answer a question. the other three majors are much friendlier. i also found that prices don't vary that much. for every price cheaper at one there is an equal amount cheaper at each of the others.

P.S. Local egg prices for a dozen is now 4.75 Florin. Plublished in the local paper with anguish as they are upset and will set the price that can be sold for. As you know , divide by 1.75 and add 3% and you will get the exact price. Still peanuts to live on Aruba! I'm sure I paid this much or more on Cape Cod, probably more!!! But they were fresh as water out of the tap. Can't knock the Cape for fresh goods>
Sorry if I offend you that are south of the Cape. If it's any concelation, I am betting on the Jets, if you can't beat em, join em!

My favorite is Ling's because of the cleaniness and ease of finding what i need. Next is Kong Hing, then Super Foods. Certified is last on my list - I don't bother to go there anymore.

Ditto Liz N.J. , but I would pick Super food above Hong King, ( I love the bread they bake and I also buy from local bakers) but to each it's own.

I totally agree about Certified. The only things I ever bought there were non food items.

Actually now that I think of it, most of the time we use Certified for frozen drink mixes, beer, paper goods, etc. Certainly nothing like fresh fruit or veggies. But we do seem to find bargains on the non-food item. Interesting though that it's not even on the poll. That says volumes, lol.

Talking Re: Your Favorite Grocery Store?

Well, in all fairness to Certified, I must say the only reason it is not in the poll is that I had not heard of it.

I guess I did good!!arty:

We usually shop at Ling's, probably followed by Kong Hing.

We did go to Super Food one time in September. If knew more Papiemento or Dutch, I think I would appreciate it more. We remember when Super Food was the only modern supermarket in Aruba; it was then called Pueblo. This was in the early 1990's.

More than once, we have gone to Kong Hing and they had US-style milk at half-price just before the expiration date. We are used to the milk that does not have to be refrigerated until opened, but often our guests do not like it. Another item that was on sale at Kong Hing was decaf coffee from Holland.

Hey, that's right - I remember Pueblos. As a matter of fact, I remember a store where part of it had some sort of dirt floors back then too. We used to joke about it. Oh no, come to think of it, I think it might have been the old Certified LOL

we loved pueblo's. it was a great little place to shop. i wonder if they are the owners of super food?

the sad part of certified is that they really have a wonderful selection but that entire store and the mini mall are just so bleak.

In between Pueblo and Super Food names, it had the name Cha San, so I don't know about continuous ownership.
My poor memory says that there was at least one other Pueblo on the island down towards San Nicolaas. It looked old.
On our first trips, I do remember a "warehouse-style" market that had very limited fresh and frozen items. It was good if you wanted to buy 50 pounds of rice. I think it burned down in 1989-1990 (around there, before Pueblo).

Quite a few years ago, we used to visit the Mini-mall by Certified...because at that time, it had a neat toy store that provided different gifts from Holland and Europe for the grandchildren. Then we might shop at Certified. We were never impressed with the meat, seafood or produce...but they were OK for canned and packaged products. Haven't been in there in a few years.

The Manzanitas have no ONE favorite & enjoy shopping around. We're looking forward to the new Super Foods in back of La Cabana yet will continue to shop the large & small groceries we've enjoyed the last 15 years.

I'm as budget conscious as the next guy, but saving money isn't the prime goal when buying perishable food that can only come to an island nation via air or water. I like Ling's!
